There is a version of the SAF story that sounds like good news. [...] SAF is genuinely decoupled from fossil fuel production, upstream logistics and economics. That is a real structural advantage, and the energy security case for SAF rests on it. Here is the part nobody is saying out loud: the price of SAF moved anyway.

SAF prices spiked alongside jet fuel, because SAF is not priced on its own production economics. It is priced as a spread to gasoil futures. Gasoil followed crude up. So SAF followed crude up, even though nothing in SAF’s actual supply chain or feedstock costs had changed. [...] The production side is decoupled. The pricing side is not.

𝘣𝘺 𝘌𝘮𝘪𝘭𝘺 𝘉𝘳𝘰𝘰𝘬𝘴 (𝘛𝘩𝘦 𝘏𝘪𝘭𝘭)

The House on Wednesday passed a bill to codify year-round sales of E15 ethanol fuel, a major win for members from corn-producing states but one that drew fierce opposition from other Republicans.

The vote was 218-203, with 122 Republicans, 95 Democrats and 1 independent voting in favor, and 90 Republicans and 113 Democrats opposing the bill. It also split the votes of Republican leadership. Speaker Mike Johnson (R-La.) and House Majority Leader Steve Scalise (R-La.) voted against the bill, while House Majority Whip Tom Emmer (R-Minn.) voted in favor.

𝘣𝘺 𝘑𝘪𝘮 𝘓𝘢𝘯𝘦 (𝘉𝘪𝘰𝘧𝘶𝘦𝘭𝘴 𝘋𝘪𝘨𝘦𝘴𝘵)

In astronomy, parallax describes how an object appears to shift depending on the observer’s position. Oil prices behave similarly. When prices are low, the world appears stable. Consumers interpret affordability as security. Politicians declare “energy independence.” Markets reassure themselves that the system is functioning normally. Yet the apparent calm can be deceptive.

When prices fall, those underlying tensions do not disappear. They simply become harder to see. Then comes the disruption. An embargo. A revolution. A drone strike. A pipeline shutdown. A refinery closure. Suddenly the invisible structure underneath the system reappears, and society rediscovers its exposure all at once.

Happy Earth Month! As a nonprofit educational organization, Advanced Biofuels USA celebrates Earth Day every day. And we like to do something special for Earth Month. This year we journeyed through the world of renewable fuels with the alphabet as our guide.

Each day featured words that have special meaning for transitioning to a truly sustainable renewable future. And each day we included an image representing one of that day's words. From anaerobic digestion, agricultural waste/residue, aviation fuel and algae to yard waste and zeolites, we hope you enjoyed seeing what we could come up with. And we also hope that you learned something new, something exciting, and some things that confirm that there are ways to move to a truly sustainable renewable future.
