Jesus said to them, “Have you never read in the scriptures:
‘The stone that the builders rejected
has become the cornerstone; this was the Lord’s doing, and it is amazing in our eyes’?"

Matthew 21:42

We hear Jesus tell another parable in today’s gospel. This is a story of a loving landowner who plants a vineyard, protects it with a wall and a watchtower and then leased it to tenants. It seems that when harvest time comes, the tenants forget that the vineyard belongs to someone else. In fact, they abuse and kill the ones who come for the landowner's share of the crop. They even kill the landowner's son. Jesus asks the religious leaders what will happen to the tenants. They respond that the tenants will be severely punished and thrown out.

At the end of the story, the religious leaders realize that Jesus is talking about them, but are afraid to respond. Jesus says the kingdom of God will be taken away from them and given to those who will bear fruit of the kingdom. God's kingdom that Jesus is talking about is the way of God here on earth - where the last are first and the first are last, where love is lived, and grace is shared.

As followers of Jesus, how are we called to bear fruit? What can others see of the fruit we produce?

For John came to you in the way of righteousness, and you did not believe him, but the tax collectors and the prostitutes believed him, and even after you saw it you did not change your minds and believe him.

Matthew 21:32

Jesus shares another parable in today’s gospel. After the religious leaders challenge his authority to teach, he tells a story of a father and two sons. One son promises to work, but doesn’t, and the other says he won’t, but does.

It is a challenging story with Jesus asking “ who did the will of the father?” Of course it is the one who did the work. He follows up with telling the religious leaders that the people they consider to be sinners will be in the kingdom of God ahead of them. The kingdom of God is where people love their neighbor and where the last are first.

What message do you hear in this story? Is it better to say or to do?

Take what belongs to you and go; I choose to give to this last the same as I give to you. Am I not allowed to do what I choose with what belongs to me? Or are you envious because I am generous?

Matthew 20:14-15

Jesus shares a parable about a generous land owner in today's gospel. The landowner hires workers several times during the day, offering them a day's wage. Not all workers work all day, but at the end of the day, the land owner instructs them to be paid, starting with those who came last.

The workers who came last are paid the same wage as the workers who came first and worked all day. When they see that, the workers who came first complained that they should get more. But the landowner questions them - did they not agree to work for the wages they were paid? What business is it of theirs how much the others get paid?

What message do you hear in this story? One of grace, mercy and generosity on the part of the landowner? Or one of unfairness to those who worked longer? How might we understand God's grace and forgiveness in light of this story? Do we feel thankful for the grace we are shown, or might we wonder why others "deserve" any grace?
