Meet our third electrical engineering intern, Alexander Viatchenko-Karpinski. Alex grew up in the San Francisco Bay Area and moved to Massachusetts two years ago. He graduated from Massbay this Spring and majored in Electrical and Computer Engineering.

—
Why Electrical and Computer Engineering?
I chose Electrical and Computer Engineering because I’ve always enjoyed doing math and physics and love to problem-solve. The idea of being able to figure out electrical problems is like doing really fun but challenging puzzles. I also think that this field is very promising for the future and I would love the opportunity to be a part of that.

Why did you choose DRF Engineering?
I chose to work at DRF because of the amazing opportunity they provide to get hands-on work experience in my field, getting to work on exciting projects, being able to work in a collaborative environment, and getting to learn more about engineering.

What are you looking forward to this summer?
This summer I look forward to working at DRF with a group of enthusiastic and brilliant engineers, watching the Euros and Copa America, and of course enjoying the lovely New England weather.

What do you do in your spare time?
In my spare time, I love to play and watch soccer, always trying to watch as many games as I can. I also enjoy traveling around the world visiting new places and learning about different cultures. One final thing is that I love animals, especially donkeys.

Welcome Alex!

Now, meet our marketing intern Jocelyn Yu! Jocelyn is from Newton, MA, and just graduated from Wellesley College majoring in Environmental Studies and Media Arts and Sciences.

—
Why Environmental Studies and Media Arts and Sciences (MAS)?
I have been passionate about sustainability since high school. I wanted to learn about the different aspects of the environment (policy, science, business etc). Environmental Studies gave me a wide range of skills to do impact-driven work. I chose MAS because I enjoy hands-on work. I love to design, create things, and make them come to life.

Why did you choose DRF Engineering?
I want to work in a tight team and get hands-on experience. DRF is a great place to experiment!

What are you looking forward to this summer?
I’m excited to work with real clients, learn more about engineering, and help the company expand!

What do you do in your spare time?
I love to travel and try new activities, learn about different cultures, and enjoy nature in my spare time. I’ve been trying to master surfing whenever I can. While at home, I like to watch films, catch up with friends, and swim.

Exciting News!

We recently added more differential voltage probes to our lab arsenal, a move set to expand the way we test and analyze switching power converters.

What are differential probes, you might ask?

They are often used for measuring switch mode power supplies, inverters, and motor drivers – really any time you don’t want ground-referenced measurements.

Differential probes are also used to measure differential signals, which are common in audio equipment and high speed serial communication lines.

Differential signals, and hence differential probes have a tolerance for common mode noise. Common mode noise is noise that occurs on both lines of a differential signal. For high speed digital signals, this dramatically improves the tolerance to noise sources like cross talk and power-plane induced noise.

The probes offer high Bandwidth which increase accuracy, especially for things like power measurements, as well as your ability to properly see high speed signals.
We also made sure our newly added probes have an adequate Common Mode Rejection Ratio( CMRR) which is vital when testing a system that deals with common mode phenomena.

Uncover the brilliance behind DRF Engineering Services through this Q&A with Saad Thabit, our founder and driving force!

Q: What motivated you to start consulting in power electronics?

A: I've always been hooked on the challenge and the huge possibilities that come with making renewable energy something everyone can use. After 25 years in this field, it just felt like the perfect moment to shift gears and start helping companies through the maze of power conversion systems. I was all in to create solutions that would really shake things up in terms of energy efficiency.
Fast forward, and here we are, my firm, which sprouted up naturally from this passion, is hitting its 10-year milestone! We've had the privilege of working with over 40 companies, both big and small. This journey wouldn't have been possible without the incredible support from my family, friends, and colleagues who backed me up to chase this dream. Here's to chasing more dreams and pushing even more boundaries!

Q: Can you share a significant challenge you faced with one of your designs?

A: Sure, tackling heat in high-power designs was tough. As we aimed for better efficiency and compactness, cooling became a big deal. We really dove into R&D to crack this, experimenting with new cooling methods and materials. A big win was using the Printed Circuit Board (PCB) as a heat sink, which not only fixed our heat problems but also cut down weight, a huge plus for applications like drone prop drives or Electronic Speed Controllers (ESC).

Supercharged Announcement! Our Power Electronics Lab is leveling up!
With a surge in innovative projects and the growing demands of our field, we've
upgraded our lab with new instruments and equipment.

What's new? We just added a resistive Load Bank!
The load bank, with a capacity of 15 KVA and an operational voltage of 120/240 VAC, facilitates the testing of inverter hardware and firmware throughout the prototype phases and during initial stages of production.

However, the capabilities of this load bank extend far beyond basic testing! Its versatility allows us to comprehensively analyze inverter behavior across a spectrum of load conditions. By examining everything from transient responses to voltage regulation in detail.

Why does this matter? It ensures the reliability and efficiency of our designs in
real-world applications, reducing the risk of failures. Plus, it underscores our
commitment to innovation and quality, supporting our R&D efforts with precision.
