“This is 100% true…”
Names are not mentioned to protect the Disaster Relief professionals who wrote and verified this incredible story…
“As I previously posted, I took down my original posts on our trip to deliver water donated by friends and members of the Charlton County Historical Society to folks in VA impacted by Helene. The posts innocently identified individuals who had taken the initiative to go up into the mountains to help those people trapped. I will not go into detail but the last thing I wanted to do was bring upon them negative responses to their generosity. But, I MUST report what I saw and heard.
“What follows is strictly my personal experience. I will not name the others who experienced it with me and are still experiencing it now that I have a returned home.
“Last Wednesday, as some of you know, I made a mad dash up to Damascus, Virginia, where I have friends and family to deliver a van load of much needed drinking water and supplies.
“When I got to the area I was told I could not deliver to Damascus as previously planned.
“I personally watched a PSA instructing locals to stay home, to not go out to check on their neighbors, to not donate. The official was very clear. The government is in charge and don't need our help.
“A nice man drove me up into the mountains to take the supplies I brought directly to the people he knew to be trapped there. We expected at any moment to be stopped and turned around.
“I saw a lot of trucks and men standing around in staging areas. I saw very little actual work going on BUT there was evidence of road clearing because we were able to make it back into the hollows and valleys.
“We went in as far as we could go and honked the horn. People came running down the hill to us and carefully crossed a damaged bridge to get to the truck. They were like kids in a candy store but it wasn't candy that had them excited; it was drinking water, gasoline, and much needed supplies necessary for daily living. These people had lost everything to a flash flood through their little valley.
“Their level of desperation and appreciation broke my heart.
“A woman stopped and told us she had been going deep into the hollows everyday since the storm and evacuating people with her 4x4. She described being stopped by two men in a government vehicle who told her she could not "go up there". She told them to try and stop her, then continued on her way.
“I heard personally from survivors who were able to get out and go to the FEMA disaster center only to be turned away. I spoke personally to elderly people who can not travel down to the disaster relief. They are relying completely on the young man shuttling me through the valleys and hollows delivering our water.
“I had a young boy, around 10 years old, to ask me how long a person could live without water.
“I met an elderly gentleman who was on oxygen and a feeding tube before the flash flood swept through his house. With no power he and his wife who is also on oxygen must stay as still and as quiet as possible to conserve what oxygen their wrecked lungs can take in. To eat, the man is mashing up food and then trying to swallow it although I witnessed him strangling as he tried to drink so I know eating is a struggle for him.
“There were areas where I personally smelled the overpowering stench of death.
“This is what I know: Our government was woefully unprepared for a disaster of this magnitude. Big government is only possible when the population depends completely on it for everything. A bureaucracy is not flexible enough to adequately manage a response to this level of devastation and disaster. To deny us the freedom to help our fellow man is an outrage.
“The main road back into the area where we delivered our water and supplies is now open but I assure you the ONLY aid getting to the survivors I encountered is from those local individuals who immediately responded, went into the mountains, found survivors and said "Let me help you."
“We will never hear all the horror stories of this catastrophe. We will never be told of all the miracles and personal tragedies. We will not find all the missing. And some areas will never recover. We will not get the true picture of our government's response.
“But this I do know: it is the individuals rolling up their sleeves and getting to work that made this country great and NOT a government of bureaucrats hell bent on micromanaging its people.
As we prepare small airplanes for deployment this week we received this picture from www.angelflightsoars.org
From Angel Flight Soars:
“241 people were found alive yesterday in western North Carolina…200 were huddled in a small stone church- starving but alive
1 was pulled from underneath a demolished house with 8 bodies on top of him -
The other 40 were found in the tiny town - Egypt.
All hungry. But living.
Praise God
