The amygdala is the part of the brain that can subconsciously detect threat and fear and emotions before we’re even consciously aware of it. It plays a real important role for survival… but the problem is, some of us (and our kids) have overactive, overprotective amygdalas that hijack the more calm, logical parts of our brain. If this happens to your child, you want to get comfortable with 🧠Knowing what kinds of sensory triggers or environments are most likely to signal danger to the amygdala 🔥Knowing which body-based regulation tools work best for your child. This might take some experimenting and exploring. Each child is different, so what works for my child might not work for yours, but some of our go-to amygdala shut down strategies include: 🧊Putting cold ice cubes in hand or neck 😮‍💨4-7-8 breathing 🧘‍♀️Squeezing or deep pressure to hands, arms and legs Have you ever experienced this before with your child? In January, two new TRICARE contracts went live—TriWest (West Region) and TRICARE East—are now in effect, and families have been sharing they are already experiencing the negative impacts. Exceptional Families of the Military is collecting feedback to ensure their voices are heard as part of our ongoing advocacy efforts.

📣 We’ve launched two brief surveys—one for each region—to better understand what’s working, what’s not, and where support is urgently needed.
