The Biggest Mistake New Writers Make (And How to Avoid It)
Many people believe writing starts when inspiration arrives.
It doesn’t.
Writing starts with paying attention.
Paying attention to the conversation that stayed with you long after it ended.
Paying attention to the lesson you learned the hard way.
Paying attention to the memory that keeps resurfacing.
One of the biggest mistakes I see new writers make is waiting until they feel “ready” to write.
The truth?
Most powerful writing is discovered through the process—not before it.
The first draft isn’t supposed to be perfect.
It’s supposed to exist.
That’s why I encourage writers to focus on progress over perfection. Give yourself permission to write the messy version first. You can revise a rough draft. You can’t revise a blank page.
Here are three simple ways to strengthen your writing today:
✍️ Keep a running list of ideas in your phone.
✍️ Write for ten minutes without editing yourself.
✍️ Read your work aloud to catch places where your voice naturally shines.
Every published author, poet, and storyteller started with a first draft.
The difference isn’t talent.
It’s consistency.

She sat staring at the blinking cursor for nearly twenty minutes.
Not because she didn’t have anything to say.
Quite the opposite.
There were pages of thoughts in her heart. Stories she had lived. Lessons she had learned. Poems she had written in her mind a hundred times.
But doubt kept whispering:
“What if it’s not good enough?”
“What if nobody understands?”
“What if I get it wrong?”
So she almost closed the laptop.
Almost.
Instead, she wrote one sentence.

What started as a hesitant paragraph became a story. The story became a poem. The poem became healing.
And that’s the thing about writing…
You don’t have to begin with confidence.
You begin with courage.
The first draft isn’t supposed to be perfect. It’s supposed to be honest.
Every powerful book, moving poem, and unforgettable story started with someone willing to write imperfectly before they wrote beautifully.
