Next Saturday!!!
For all of those who did not know it, our office will be closing as of September 30th. We not longer have funding for our programs. It has been an honor and a pleasure to work with the Soldier and Family Members of Fort Riley. Susan and I will miss you and we will especially miss those awesome students in the Fort Riley schools. You all made our days so fun and we loved providing you with nutrition education and a healthy snack. The hugs were icing on the cake. Please feel free to contact the Riley or Geary County Extension offices to see what programming is available. Also, if you have any questions regarding nutrition, food preparation-preservation, family life issues, resource managment issues and child development issues. They are you source for Family Consumer Science and Gardening questions. Thank you again for the opportunity to impact your lives-you have had a very positive impact upon us. Toni Bryant and Susan Schoneweis!
Hungry? Or know of hungry families on post? Spread the word... I just learned that the Harvesters Mobile Food Pantry delivers to Manhattan at Pottorf Hall and the Ogden community center once a month. I've never heard Manhattan & Ogden sites mentioned on WIBW when they mention deliveries to other towns.
Food is given away first come, first serve, no income qualifications, but they do collect demographics so they know how many people are being served. Up to 5 items are given per family with the amount based on the number in the household. See their schedule at:

For all of those meat rinsers out there. Check out this visual that shows just how the water sprays everywhere contaminating your surfaces. Cooking kills the pathogens (disease causing microorganisms) so please don't wash your chickens, roasts, etc.
Do you wash your chicken? Might want to reconsider that. http://bit.ly/14x2Cuu

In light of the Cyclospora breakout-take a look at this article from the K-State Research and Extension Food Safety Specialist. Make sure you wash all of your vegetables--even prepackaged salads, carrots, etc. Stay safe, stay healthy!
Proper Handling and Preparation of Food Protects Consumers Although these practices are always important, extra caution should be taken as a result of a recent outbreak of the Cyclospora infection. The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) have reported more than 353 cases, most likely spread by consuming contaminated produce.
