UPAVIM fosters collaboration and women's empowerment in its leadership structure. Because of this, UPAVIM's work is more important than ever.

The UPAVIM Community Development Foundation empowers women and children in an impoverished urban "red zone" of Guatemala City through support for education and Fair Trade employment in our crafts programs. UPAVIM Community Development Foundation (UCDF) is a US-based 501c3 non-profit dedicated to supporting the women and families of the UPAVIM cooperative, located in the urban "red zone" of La Espe

At UPAVIM, the environment is carefully prepared to support independence and discovery.

Everything has a place. Everything has a purpose.

Materials are arranged with intention, inviting children to choose, explore, and engage. The space is orderly, calm, and accessible, allowing children to move with confidence and clarity.

In this environment, children are not directed at every step. They are trusted.
They select their own work, care for their surroundings, and move through the classroom with a growing sense of responsibility and belonging.

The prepared environment does not control the child. It supports the child in becoming capable, independent, and self-directed.

UPAVIM is looking for passionate, conversational Spanish-speaking volunteers to join us in La Esperanza on the outskirts of Guatemala City. Whether you're helping out in the K-6 Montessori school, running literacy activities in the community library, or assisting in the Reforzamiento after-school program, your time here makes a direct impact.

The Perks:

🏡 Live in a vibrant volunteer community right on "the roof" of UPAVIM.

🍲 Share communal dinners and immerse yourself in Guatemalan culture.

🚌 Spend your weekends exploring nearby Antigua or traveling Central America.

If you can commit from a few months up to a year and want to see what true community-led development looks like, UPAVIM wants to hear from you.

At UPAVIM, education is an invitation to explore.
Children are given the tools to investigate, to question, to discover. And through their own activity, they begin to construct understanding that is meaningful and lasting.

The guide prepares, presents, and then steps back, trusting the child’s natural drive to explore.

Because learning is not something we give to children. It is something they build for themselves.

At UPAVIM, we witness the quiet power of deep focus each day.

Concentration is not something we force; it is something we protect.

We see it in the child who becomes absorbed in their work—repeating, refining, and losing track of everything else around them.

In these moments, learning deepens. Confidence grows. Independence strengthens.

The environment supports it. The materials sustain it. The guide steps back to allow it.

And within that focus, something remarkable unfolds: the child begins to reveal their fullest potential.

In the marginalized community of La Esperanza, Guatemala, safe and affordable childcare is incredibly hard to come by. UPAVIM’s daycare gives working mothers a safe sanctuary for their babies and toddlers. While moms are creating beautiful fair trade crafts or teaching in the school, their little ones are receiving nutritious meals and an early education.

✨ Empowering UPAVIM’s Next Generation of Leaders! ✨

We’re excited to share an incredible opportunity for our community!

After mentoring UPAVIM’s leadership team, Eder Cuevas, Executive Director of Montessori AMI Mexico, has generously offered a 75% scholarship for two of our dedicated leaders, Brenda and Pahola, to attend a prestigious leadership workshop.

This is more than a course—it’s an investment in the future of UPAVIM. 💛

Thanks to this generous scholarship, we only need to raise $480 total to make this opportunity possible for both of them.

Every contribution, no matter the size, brings us closer to our goal and supports Brenda and Pahola in bringing new knowledge, skills, and vision back to their community.

🤝 How you can help:

• Share this post to help us spread the word

Our goal is to raise these funds by August and with your support, we know it’s possible!

Thank you for believing in our leaders and in the power of education to transform communities. 💛

An empty UPAVIM Community Library is a rare sight, usually you’ll find this room bursting at the seams with energy, laughter, and the rustle of turning pages.

Most children in our community don’t have access to books at home. So, they flood to this community safe space to do homework, log onto computers, tackle puzzles, and dive into a world of stories.

At UPAVIM, we often see the most meaningful learning happen when children begin to extend the work on their own.

Here, the Pink Tower and Brown Stair come together in a self-created extension—blocks combined, contrasted, and reimagined by the child.

What begins as two distinct materials becomes a study in relationships: thick and thin, large and small, height and width. The child is not simply repeating a lesson—they are transforming it, testing their understanding through construction and design.

Each adjustment is intentional. Each choice is informed by observation. And through this process, the child deepens their understanding of form while strengthening concentration and problem-solving skills.

These moments reflect a core belief: when children are given well-prepared materials and the freedom to explore them, they do not just learn concepts, they begin to think with them.

At UPAVIM, we recognize the importance of process.

In the classroom, this unfolds in simple, meaningful ways.

A child selects work, carries it carefully, completes each step with intention, and returns it to its place.

This sequence is not just routine; it is construction.

Through beginning, middle, and completion, the child builds focus, independence, and a sense of order within themselves.

And in that process, something deeper forms: a growing sense of capability and self.
