One of the greatest shifts pregnancy has brought to my skincare philosophy is the realization that not every symptom needs a stronger solution.

When hormones surge, nutrient demands increase, blood volume expands, and the body begins the remarkable work of growing new life, many women notice their skin becomes more reactive than usual. Acne, rosacea, melasma, dryness, sensitivity, and dermatitis often lead us searching for the next product that might “fix” what has changed.

Yet pregnancy has taught me that this is often the season to become gentler, not more aggressive.

Rather than reaching for stronger acids, more exfoliation, or increasingly complicated routines, I focus on supporting the skin barrier and providing the nourishment my skin may be craving during a season that asks so much of the body.

These are the products I have reached for most throughout this pregnancy, not because they force the skin into submission, but because they work alongside it. Hydration. Barrier support. Nutrient-dense fats. Simple ingredients. Restorative rituals.

Growing a baby requires extraordinary resources. It should come as no surprise that our skin may need a little extra support along the way, yet less complexity.

I’d love to hear from the mothers here—what was the biggest change you noticed in your skin during pregnancy? 🌿

Many women are running to more extreme topical solutions when they notice their skin shifting in pregnancy. Whether it’s acne, melasma or another inflammatory expression; it can catch us off guard and especially when we’re in a more difficult first trimester or are craving that “pregnancy glow”, we just want to find some normalcy. But the beauty of it is this: pregnancy is a gift, not only in the life that is being built within you, but for your own life and wellbeing. It is springing forth deeper needs that you weren’t able to recognize before that positive test.

Even in my third pregnancy after a six year break, my skin has been more symptomatic than ever before. It took me a moment to remember that this was not a “failure”, it was an invitation to heal. And once I started embracing that, my skin fell back into rhythm. Because my skin wasn’t lacking in anything topically, my routines had been supporting my skin beautifully for years. This needed to be deep, internal work. So while my topical products remained steady and gentle, I first focused on these lifestyle pieces to calm my mind, body and spirit.

After a longer pause than usual between batches — moving homes, settling onto new land, growing a baby, and simply tending to life — our soap shelves are finally full again.

These bars have always felt like one of the simplest expressions of what we do at Sunbird. Just regenerative grass-finished tallow, water, lye, and a few carefully chosen botanicals where called for. Old-world soapmaking, slow-cured and cut by hand.

🌾 Pure — our unscented bar. Nothing but the quiet strength of tallow itself. Simple, gentle, and made for those who prefer their skincare stripped back to the essentials.

🌊 Indigo Tide — a mineral-rich bar colored with indigo, carrying soft notes of lemon and Roman chamomile. Inspired by open water, salt air, and slower summer days.

🌷Petal & Oat — blush-toned with rose clay and pink kaolin, scented with geranium and lavender, and finished with organic oats. Floral, grounding, and comforting in the way a garden feels at dusk.

Every bar is poured, cut, cured, and wrapped by hand in our Colorado studio. Small batches, honest ingredients, and a tradition that has nourished skin for generations.

One of the reasons skincare can feel so confusing is that we often use words like hydration, nourishment, and moisture interchangeably, when they are not quite the same thing.
