Walther Flemming (1843โ€“1905)
Cell Biology โ€ข Cytology โ€ข Genetics

Walther Flemming was a German biologist whose observations of dividing cells led to one of the most important discoveries in biology: mitosis, the process by which cells divide and produce identical daughter cells.

Using improved microscopy techniques and specialized dyes to stain cell material, Flemming carefully documented the behavior of threadlike structures within the nucleus that would later be known as chromosomes. In 1879, he published detailed descriptions of how these structures separate and move during cell division, providing the first accurate account of mitosis.

Flemming's research revealed that chromosomes distribute genetic material in an orderly way during cell division, laying the groundwork for future discoveries in genetics and heredity. Although DNA had not yet been identified as the genetic material, his work provided crucial evidence that the nucleus plays a central role in inheritance.

Today, mitosis remains a fundamental concept taught in biology classrooms worldwide, and Flemming is recognized as one of the founders of modern cytology.

If you could find a bathtub large enough, Saturn would float in water!

Despite being the second-largest planet in our solar system, Saturn is the only planet with an average density lower than water. That means, theoretically, it would float instead of sink.

We're excited to introduce Brendan Eddingfield, our new Account Representative serving Illinois - Chicago.

A graduate of Loyola University New Orleans with a degree in Biological Sciences, Brendan brings valuable hands-on research experience to the role. Prior to joining MIDSCI, he worked in production-scale genomics at Bayer CropScience and supported seed phenotyping research at the Donald Danforth Plant Science Center. Having worked at the bench himself, Brendan understands the challenges laboratories face and is passionate about helping researchers find the solutions they need to succeed.

He looks forward to building strong relationships and becoming a trusted resource for laboratories throughout the region.

Please join us in welcoming Brendan to the team!

Theodor Boveri (1862โ€“1915)
Cell Biology โ€ข Genetics โ€ข Cytology

Theodor Boveri was a German biologist whose groundbreaking research helped establish the chromosome theory of inheritance and shaped modern cell biology. His work revealed that chromosomes are distinct structures within cells and play a critical role in heredity.

Through experiments with roundworm eggs and sea urchin embryos, Boveri demonstrated that both s***m and egg contribute chromosomes to an offspring and that individual chromosomes carry specific hereditary information. These discoveries helped scientists understand how traits are passed from one generation to the next.

Boveri also identified the importance of the centrosome in cell division and was among the first scientists to suggest that abnormalities in chromosomes could lead to cancer. His ideas were far ahead of their time and later became central to cancer genetics research.

Today, Boveri is considered one of the founders of modern cytology, and his discoveries continue to influence research in genetics, developmental biology, and medicine.
