What are these? And why are they all over right now?
Every five years Metro COG conducts traffic counts throughout the Fargo-Moorhead area. These counts allow engineers and planners to gauge current traffic and plan for future traffic conditions in order to plan accordingly. These counts are used in Metro COG’s travel demand model, are used by local jurisdictions and others.
The black hoses 'tubes' across the roadway count vehicles by detecting bursts of air each time a vehicle's tires runs over the tube.
The boxes with a pole (often attached to a traffic signal or light pole) are cameras used to automatically count vehicles. These are often installed along busier roadways so crews don't need to be within the roadway.
Metro COG is contracting these counts throughout the spring, summer, & fall, however the majority of the counts will be taken in April.
