Yesterday my friend and I did the Boulder Skyline Traverse (-Sanitas cuz she said that sucked her soul last year lol) I think we can call this hike “The Hike With Many Outfit Changes” cuz Colorado weather can change quite drastically over 10hours. A year ago I had been training for months for R2R so it was an interesting comparison on how my feet, knees and legs would hold up when I haven’t been going as hard on cardio. We had an awesome time and I felt pretty good! The biggest thing I noticed was how good I felt at work today since I’d been off my phone for over 24hrs. 😳 so note to self…. More nature = more creative Allie ❤️

I’ve thought so much about our travels and how I can capture our trips and making these collages are so fun and it’s something I can get done quickly. Maybe I’ll try to do a series. The poster illustrations have been done to death (in a good way) but I’m not a strong illustrator and creating these layouts with just some paper, magazines, paint, chalk pastels and a tiny bit of editing in photoshop really brings me joy. Also… the Badlands are so slept on. They’re beautiful. I haven’t seen that many stars since Alaska.

For the past almost year and a half, I’ve been working with Christina and the team at TrueNorth Steel with overflow design and art direction projects ranging from tradeshow, print ads, digital ads, billboards, social media banners, and apparel. Here are some snippets. The best advice I can give while working with legacy companies is to update typography and color. Typography is pretty weak in large corporate fields, so it’s an easy switch to make materials feel updated. I think the brand can be pushed farther than where it has been, but we are also at the mercy of time and sometimes that takes years with large companies. And I think that’s kinda fun! It will always evolve.

A few snaps from Cali. ✌️

Trading the mountains for some beach time. Won’t change the temp much since FoCo has been crazy warm. We were in Tucson last year for spring break so happy to go back to Cali. Also should try to run and see much better it is at sea level.

Grant and I are slowly working towards building the brand out. Last year we got his primary and secondary logos done, along with color and typography. He got his website built. Then we moved on to his contracts. I created this series of icons to add some layering pieces for his contracts and he can also use in social, web, apparel, promo. Nothing has to be created in a vacuum. I’m happy to move at the clients pace.

It’s just as important to post the rejects on projects as much as the final. So you *friend, client, future client* can see the work behind getting to the chosen direction. I fell hard for this first mark, anything mid-century deserves to be highlighted in my book. The second mark was drawn with a sunrise in mind and I added the line marks to have a fun gradient effect. In the end, all the strategy, keywords, moodboard workshopping is what gets the designer and client on the same page. It’s why when the whole internet has a bad viral reaction to a rebrand, it’s hard for me to judge when there could’ve been pages of research and testing done before the reveal. Except for the GAP… remember that monstrosity?! All that to say… clients deserve a chance in the decision making and it’s the designers job to lead. I have seen a lot of designers going to a one and done logo reveal but most of the time they’re building the full brand out with it and then presenting it. You’d have to build an insane foundation to make that work. I like my method of 2-3 choices. 👏🏻👏🏻👏🏻
