Yesterday, was Jaybirds Day at the Company, and Jenay Evans, among many other very worthy people, was honored as an Honored Jaybird. I was very inarticulate because I didn’t know that I would be getting up to speak. So, I decided to write down what I should have said.

Jenay often says, wouldn’t it be great to just show up at a parade, march, and leave? She puts so much more into fife and drum than playing her fife. Since she started the BCFD, then Yankee Volunteers in 2000, she has taught the fife line, actively recruited, hosted camps, dinners, rounds nights, and after parade lunches. She recognizes parade organizers with small gestures like thank you notes after parades that make an impact. Jenay is constantly thinking about keeping the corps going and how it will continue when she steps down. I have to admit, I don’t know, since she does so much. I’m grateful for the amount of work she’s done and for her pushing me to try the fife- even though I already played the piano and the flute- and it was just an other instrument to learn. The fife has made an impression in my life, giving me life long friends, and of course, my future husband and in-laws (also congratulations).
