Why are hernias sometimes repaired during a tummy tuck?

Dr. Bitar is a trained general surgeon, and he frequently fixes umbilical hernias while he’s doing an abdominoplasty.

Umbilical (belly button) hernias are common in women who have had multiple kids because the belly button is the weakest spot in the abdominal wall, making it easy for a hernia, a pouch of fat, or even an intestine to poke out from that weak abdominal spot.

If a hernia is present, it makes sense to repair it during a tummy tuck since the surgeon is already operating in the same area. This avoids the need for a separate surgical procedure.

Repairing a hernia during a tummy tuck can also enhance the overall strength and integrity of the abdominal wall, leading to better long-term results.

This wonderful lady came to Dr. Bitar to help with her lip appearance. She had braces as a teenager and then suffered trauma that created a scar of her upper lip due to the braces. She had lived with that scar her whole life and that made her not want to smile!

Dr. Bitar operated on her and resected the scar tissue of the upper lip under local anesthesia with sutures that were dissolvable. That half hour operation truly change this woman’s life!

She healed without any problems. Her beautiful smile has come back. The trauma of that incident with the braces injuring her upper lip has been erased, and she is truly one happy patient.

This operation of making the lips more even is now becoming more prevalent at the Bitar Institute given a lot of patients getting lip injections that are done with permanent fillers or fillers that don’t dissolve for one reason or another. We see patients with asymmetrical upper lips and lower lips frequently due to “ fillers gone bad”.  Some times we are able to dissolve them and sometimes they need to be resected surgically under local anesthesia.
