Luisana "Lu" Hernandez consistently shows up for our community. Now she needs us to show up for her. Lu has been active in Snohomish County arts and advocacy for decades. She has given everything she has to offer to serve her community and we are all better for it.

Yesterday, conservative Republican CM Sam Low attempted to block Lu's appointment to the Regional Law & Justice Council, with no explanation. It is no secret that the SnoCo Council has long been dominated by white males. It is imperative we have more BIPOC, particularly womxn, appointed to positions of power in our County, especially regarding Law & Justice. Our BIPOC children's lives depend on it.

The Forgotten Socialist History of Martin Luther King Jr. King believed that a multiracial working-class movement was required to overcome the failings of capitalism.

Our end goal is abolition.

With that in mind, it is important to recognize the disparity between police arrests and police brutality that occured at the capitol vs. at various BLM and defund police protests. It shows us who police are aligned with and proves that their system of policing is inconsistently applied... to the detriment of the most marginalized.

This unequal treatment should be eliminated by eliminating law enforcement, not by applying injustice to everyone equally. We refuse to legitimize mass incarceration and police brutality as acceptable treatment by calling on law enforcement to use those forces to control an uprising that they themselves are participating in. Not only is this against restorative justice and abolitionist ideology, but... do you trust the police to arrest their friends?

This is not to downplay the threat that some of our opposition poses to our democracy or our lives. Rather, it is to say that we should not place our trust in law enforcement to save us from that threat.

The prison industrial complex is not our savior.

We keep each other safe.

On our path to abolition and restorative justice, we want to be clear that reform policy is not our end goal, but rather an achievable step on the way there. Update for our comrades: Decarcerate SnoCo is still continuing the long struggle for prison abolition, restorative justice, and community care.

We have paused our in-person protesting for the last couple months due to increases in COVID cases and other straining circumstances. In that time, our members have been collecting additional Recall Fortney signatures, working to refocus our long-term efforts, and contributing to the overall DSA chapter's mutual aid efforts.

We do hope to come back with another update on next steps. In the meantime, we'll do our best to post valuable educational resources and support other organization's calls to action.
