On this day, October 1, 1943, in a dark hospital chapel under the most covert of conditions, Neophyte Philip Meier of Pomona College was initiated into the 'Cabanatuan Alpha Alumni Chapter of ΣAE, the first, to our knowledge, ever formed in a military prison camp' by a bold and brave band of Brothers. For a badge, an old, silver Philippine peso was somehow obtained and was handcrafted for the occasion.

We in Bataan and on Corregidor have found comfort and respite from war’s horror in our fraternity relations. The wretched conditions of prison camp life are no bar to the rekindling of this spirit in our hearts as we meet in secrecy, telling in whispers, and singing softly our fraternity songs.....We need have no fear of the world of law and order being overthrown as long as men cherish such ideals as we in ΣAE hold to be dear and are willing to forfeit our lives to protect and preserve. Our eight Founders met originally in secrecy; now we, in a Japanese prison camp, must also gather surreptitiously with the threat of punishment, if discovered, hanging over our heads."

Of the 28 recorded members, only 12 returned home from the war.

With Hazing Prevention Week coming to an end, we want to take a moment to recognize one of our partners, Lianne Kowiak, for all she has done to help Sigma Alpha Epsilon spread the message of hazing prevention.

We also want to shout out our chapters who are bringing Lianne to their campuses: West Chester University, the University of Tennessee, Knoxville, and Cal Poly Pomona, as well as some who have brought her to campus in the past academic year.

Thank you all for leading by example, and thank you, Lianne, for continuing to share Harrison’s story and spread the message of hazing prevention.

🇨🇭 Flag Friday: Stoos, Switzerland 🦁

SAE National Ambassador, Andrew Bentivenga, took SAE to new heights at Klingenstock Mountain in Stoos, Switzerland.

Andrew is currently completing a seven-week project in Zurich as part of his undergraduate requirement at Worcester Polytechnic Institute, developing an interactive tutorial to help a Swiss university use artificial intelligence responsibly and effectively.

When the work was done, he took advantage of his free time to explore the Swiss Alps.

From the classroom to the mountaintops, SAE is going places.
