🦴Why are we checking our bones so late??

Let’s run the numbers..

Our bones are the strongest about 20yo

Then lose bone mineral density steadily over time,
Or faster if we have phases of
- Athletic training
- Amenorrhea
- Malabsorption, IBD, restrictive diets
- Steroid use (even inhaled)

Then in the first 5-7 years of menopause we can lose up to 20%! Or at best about 1% per year.

By 65, the damage is done.

I don’t know about you, but I’d rather prevent osteoporosis all together.

That’s why I recommend women get a DXA scan in their 30s or 40s (before perimenopause!) so they know exactly where they stand and exactly what their body needs.💪

Were you an elite athlete in your teens? Did you lose your period? Have a history of restrictive eating, steroid use, or digestive issues?

Cindy Dupuis shares the surprising risk factors that put women at higher risk for bone loss later in life.

Knowing your risk factors can be the difference between getting an early DEXA scan or finding out far too late.

🦴 Your bones could be at risk if your estrogen is low from menopause, perimenopause, or hypothalamic amenorrhea.

Even just 6 months of lower estrogen can increase the risk of bone density loss, leading to osteopenia or osteoporosis.

The best way to be proactive about your bone health is to test.

I recommend the average woman get a DXA scan in her 40s to understand her bone density when there’s still time to do something about it.

And blood testing for hormone levels, vitamin D, calcium, and magnesium all help you understand if your bones have the right ingredients and inputs.

By the time most women get their first DEXA scan at 65, they've already lost up to 20% of their bone density.

Cindy Dupuis explains that women can lose the most bone within the first 10 years of menopause, yet most aren't tested until decades into that decline. The good news? You can advocate for an earlier scan, and there is so much you can do in your 20s, 30s, and 40s to protect your bones for life.
