Off the coast of Fort Bragg, the kelp forests are disappearing - and with them, a way of life for local fishermen, tribal communities, and the scientists racing to understand what's being lost.

On Thursday, August 27, we're bringing their story to the Farm. Join us for the next installment of our Farm Film & Music Series with a screening of "Sequoias of the Sea," a documentary about Mendocino County's vanishing kelp and the community fighting to restore it. The film weaves a powerful story of climate change, community restoration efforts, and the urgent need to protect our ocean forests.

The evening starts at 6 PM with live music and time to connect with community partners, followed by a panel discussion at 7:30 and the film at 8. It's an evening built around a simple idea: that real change starts with real conversation, under an open sky, with people who care.

Tickets are $12 in advance or $18 at the door, with proceeds supporting the Farm's work in sustainability and food justice.

Meet some members of our Farmily! 💚

🥕 Keelin is our Farm Educator & Volunteer Coordinator, and before joining us, she spent her days at a goat dairy called Yogoata, milking, herding, and cleaning up after the herd. These days, she brings that same hands-on energy to our education department, supporting camps, field trips, and volunteer programs.

🌻 Megan serves as our Education Manager for Technical Learning, bringing over 10 years of farm-based education experience to our Field Trip Program, where she helps visitors build a real connection with the land. When she's not at the Farm, you can find her at the pottery wheel, out exploring the outdoors, or checking another National Park off her list - she's on a mission to visit them all!

🥬 Claire is our Programs & Events Associate, and her path to the Farm ran through regenerative farms across the country, plus a Permaculture Design Course along the way. Now she helps bring our farm events and Nature Play program to life.

We're so grateful to have them on our team. 💚

Tonight at sundown begins Tisha B’Av, the saddest day on the Jewish calendar.

This day of mourning commemorates the destruction of the ancient Temples in Jerusalem, along with other tragedies and losses in Jewish history. It invites us to pause, grieve, and honestly face what has been broken in our world, our communities, and ourselves.

At Coastal Roots Farm, we often look to the land for wisdom. Compost teaches us that what has broken down can become the foundation for new life. In that same spirit, Tisha B’Av reminds us that mourning is not the opposite of hope. It can be part of how we grow empathy, deepen our responsibility to one another, and begin again.

As we sit with loss, we remember that healing is collective, and renewal begins in community.

Earth Based Judaism is back!

Join us for a three-session cohort "Earth Based Judaism: Talmud, Land, and Belonging", exploring Talmudic stories about creativity, home, drought, and rain - and what they teach us about our relationship to the land and to each other.

We'll gather at the Farm to read ancient texts through literary, cultural, and contemporary lenses, reflecting on belonging, memory, and community along the way.

No Jewish background needed - all adults, of any or no faith background, are welcome!

We're excited to welcome guest teacher Chaya Gilboa, who is joining us this summer as a teaching resident. She is a PhD candidate in the Department of Literature, a Talmud scholar whose research focuses on questions of beauty and time, and has been teaching Talmud for over a decade. Alongside her academic work, she has spent many years leading social initiatives in Israel, particularly in the areas of Jewish-Arab relations and dialogue between secular and ultra-Orthodox communities. She is also a regular voice in Israeli radio and television, where she brings Jewish texts into conversation with contemporary issues.

Shout out to two of our corporate partners, Deloitte and EisnerAmper , for volunteering at Coastal Roots Farm.

Both teams spent time in our Food Forest, weeding around produce beds and our Ocean to Anza native plant garden, collecting snails, and mulching pathways.
