The Comfort Cub Story

After my son George died, my heart hurt so much and my arms felt so empty. It's not only the mother who suffers though. Thank you. Marcella

However, I found that when I held a weighted object close to my chest, the pain in my heart and aching in my arms immediately went away. I began to research and found out that both of these physical symptoms can be common after the loss of a child. At that time there were no medical terms for these physical symptoms, but now it is recognized as a medical condition called "Takotsubo Cardiomyopathy" (ICD 9- 429.83) for the aching in the heart and "Empty Arm Syndrome" for the pain in the arms. I felt inspired and compelled to create a weighted teddy bear for others who were grieving a similar loss. I wanted to make sure no other mothers left the hospital empty-handed and broken hearted the way I did. While it is no substitute for the loss of a child, it does help ease the pain of empty arms. Fathers, siblings and even grandparents are in pain too. I have received many letters and stories about how The Comfort Cub helped ease their pain as well. Please share with those who may benefit.

We were even spotted after someone placed their weighted therapeutic Comfort Cub on the World Trade Center Memorial Wall and NBC Entertainment showed the Memorial Wall on the opening night of Sunday Night Football 🚒🇺🇸❤️🫶🧸

I need to take a moment to thank this one special woman, Marcella Johnson. Without her on this 9/11 Memorial 25th anniversary donation visit, hundreds of hearts would not have the support they need to help heal. Without her, hundreds of people would not have said their loved ones’ names out loud. Without her asking each person she saw carrying a picture of their loved one, wearing a t-shirt of their loved one, or holding a candle with their loved ones’ names, hundreds would not have shared their loved one’s story. Some would not have shared their brother, sister, dad, mom, child, never made it home that day. Some would not have shared their loved one died from illness in the aftermath of 9/11. Some would not have shared they dug through voids in “the pile” looking for their crew. Some would not have shared they lost their loved one to su***de afterwards. It was story after story after story we got to hear - because of her love for helping people. FDNY Chief Joseph Downey, whom we met in San Diego the Saturday before 9/11, shared the story of his dad, Deputy Chief Raymond Downey, the “Master of Disaster,” who was killed on 9/11. Marcella’s kindness and way of connecting with people led Chief Downey and his family to invite us to see them again on 9/11 in NYC at the naming ceremony. Sometimes, I just listen to Marcella talk and watch her fearless sensitivity move mountains while simultaneously making people feel loved, cared about and most importantly remembered. Marcella sadly knows all too well about losing a loved one. She knows when she says a 9/11 family member’s name out loud, that it helps them feel good. She goes beyond that though. She goes to their name on the World Trade Center Memorial Wall and sketches it out. She goes to the 9/11 Memorial Museum, finds their photo and sends it to the loved one she just met. Knowing that a perfect stranger really does care and wants their perished loved one to never be forgotten. I needed to share my perspective on who Marcella is and why I feel so privileged to share her mission with the world. She makes me a kinder, stronger, braver human being.
