Kindergarteners from all nine school sites join us each year for a hands-on, sensory-rich seed to compost learning experienceโ€”with pumpkins! Students tour the farm, plant seeds, get up close with worms, and take home their very own pumpkin. Itโ€™s an empowering day of discovery, exploration, and life-cycle learning!

Summertime at Farm Lab is busy, busy! The farm team harvests hundreds of pounds of tomatoes each week that our central kitchen turns into scratch made pizza and pasta sauces. They also harvest strawberries for summer programs, as well as cultivate the produce successions for our student return in August.

As the school year winds down, the work on the farm ramps up. From the greenhouse to the fields, there is evidence of the abundance that will be available on school salad bars and for educational programming when students return for the 26-27 school year. All visiting EUSD 2nd graders develop a deep understanding of pollination and its integral connection to the sustainability of our food sources. Students observe the structure of flowers, tour the farm, plant seeds, and learn about the many different pollinators. Students also discover that pollinator numbers are declining, the contributing factors, and potential impacts. No chocolate without pollinators? No strawberries? Yikes! 2nd graders know why pollination matters - and how humans can help!
