Encinitas has a way of hiding its history in plain sight.

Beneath today’s surf culture, cafés, and coastal neighborhoods are traces of very different eras: a silent film actor who invested in early town lots, a historic movie palace still operating downtown and a homestead community a bit inland. This cliffside spiritual retreat gave a surf break its name, and flower fields that once helped define the region’s economy.

Most of it is still there — if you know where to look.

Honoring the Warner–Carrillo Ranch House and SOHO - A new bronze historical plaque will soon grace the welcome room at the Warner–Carrillo Ranch House.

The Crown Colony Chapter of the Colonial Dames of the XVII Century is dedicating this tribute to the 1857 adobe built by Vicenta Carrillo, a remarkable Californio woman rancher whose life and home reflect the early history of the Valle de San José.

The ranch house stands as a witness to the Southern Emigrant Trail, the era of the Butterfield Overland Mail, and the ranching traditions that shaped the region the plaques recognition includes the collaborative restoration efforts of the Vista Irrigation District and Save Our Heritage Organisation (SOHO), the ranch house continues to welcome visitors and offer a glimpse into its storied past.

One of the long-standing missions of the Colonial Dames and its Crown Colony Chapter is the placement of historical markers at local landmarks of significance. As a society rooted in history and heritage, the organization works to recognize historic sites and the stories they represent remain visible, meaningful, and accessible to those who share a passion for American history and a commitment to its preservation.

Saturday, April 25 at 1pm.
Guests are invited to honor this enduring landmark and the many women and men who have helped preserve its legacy. The event will include a brief program and tours of the adobe.

On April 25 from 8 a.m. to 9 a.m., we’re heading "off the beaten path" for the City Nature Challenge! Join us as we cross the highway from South Carlsbad State Beach to explore a hidden gem of protected land that most visitors never see.

We’ll be hiking through rare coastal sage scrub, checking out unique vernal pools, and keeping our eyes (and ears) peeled for the protected California Gnatcatcher. 🐦✨

Join us THIS Saturday, April 18 from 9 a.m. to 12 p.m. at Hawk View Park, 1309 Blue Heron Ave, Encinitas, for the City’s 15th annual Arbor Day Celebration. Help plant more than 50 new trees, enjoy family activities, and explore educational booths. It’s a tree‑mendous day!

Tree planting participants should wear closed‑toed shoes and hats and will be asked to sign a waiver. This FREE community event welcomes all. Register at EncinitasCA.gov/ArborDay.

Attendees are encouraged to bring fresh, homegrown, or farm‑fresh produce for Healthy Day Partners’ Homegrown Hunger Relief program donation stations. Also bring a bucket/bag to collect FREE mulch at the event! 🌱
