👑🏛️ DID YOU KNOW?
Many people assume Elizabeth, New Jersey was named after Queen Elizabeth I of England…
But that’s actually not true.
When the settlement was founded in 1664, it was named Elizabethtown in honor of Lady Elizabeth Carteret, the wife of Sir George Carteret — one of the original proprietors of New Jersey.
So while the name may sound royal, its story is rooted in the early founding of New Jersey and the people who helped shape its history.
More than 360 years later, Elizabeth remains one of the most historic cities in the state, with stories waiting to be discovered around every corner.
✨ In Elizabeth, even the city’s name has a story.
