Spring is on its way! Very important for those who plan to pre-emerge to start scheduling appointments. The application works best when the soil temps are around 50'. Please don't wait until after the spring green up to schedule. Most w**ds (especially crabgrass and henbit) have already germinated at that time. What is Pre-emergent?
This is a very common question I hear when i'm out in the field. Most home owners understand that an application of pre-emergent is vital to keeping a w**d free lawn, but is unclear how the application works.

Just like the name suggest a pre-emergent controls w**ds before they emerge. The chemical resides in the soil creating a barrier to stop seeds from growing.
Notice the word seeds! This means if your trying to grow anything from seed like ryegrass or fescue caution should be taken not to apply in that area. It is also a misconception that pre-emergent will kill existing w**ds. The liquids being sprayed durring a pre-emergent application is a recipe of post-emergents and pre-emergent chemicals. Most professionals could have up to four different pesticides in their recipe. One to prevent w**ds from germinating and others to kill the existing w**ds. With that being said it is best to let the application set for a few days in order for the post emergents to kill the existing w**ds then irrigate 1/2" worth of water to ensure the pre-emergent gets in the soil profile.
