Biodiversity is in trouble, but claims of 75% declines in animal populations and catastrophic biodiversity tipping points are not supported. Worse, they detract from the hard work of learning from both our failures and successes.
Tales of Earthly Doom and Catastrophe? Rubbish! I claim that, like Half-elven Lord Elrond, I “was there at the beginning.” In this case, when, at a meeting in Michigan in 1985, Michael Soulé asked those

This Lost Species Day, we face the heartbreaking reality of the 2025 IUCN Red List update. Six species have been officially declared Extinct (EX).
We have lost: 🐦 The Slender‑billed Curlew; 🐁 The Christmas Island Shrew; 🐚 The Cape Verde Cone Snail; and 🍂 Three unique Australian Bandicoots (the Marl, South‑eastern Striped, and Nullarbor Barred)
These aren't just names on a list; they were vital threads in the web of life, ripped away by habitat fragmentation and destruction.
But grief without action is not enough. We are far from helpless. The science is clear: to save what remains, we must reconnect their fragmented worlds. Saving Nature is actively working on the ground to restore vital habitat corridors that give vulnerable species a fighting chance to survive and adapt.
We need your help to build these lifelines before it’s too late.
Don't just mourn what we’ve lost—invest in saving what’s left by supporting our work to restore and protect habitat at https://savingnature.com/donate-2/

New Beginnings in Brazil’s Atlantic Forest
This newly acquired property marks the next step in expanding our wildlife corridor in the Atlantic Forest of Brazil. Once a degraded cattle pasture, it will soon be transformed with thousands of native trees, reconnecting forest fragments and creating vital habitat for countless species.
In partnership with our local ally, Reserva Ecológica de Guapiaçu (REGUA), we’re restoring this landscape to bring life back to the hillsides and strengthen one of the most biodiverse ecosystems on Earth.
Every tree planted here helps stitch together the green fabric of the Atlantic Forest—linking wildlife, water, and people in a thriving future.
