10 People. 15 Feet. One Huge Impact.
Durango, it’s time to build your team.
The 2026 Special Olympics Colorado Law Enforcement Torch Run Train Pull is coming to the Durango & Silverton Narrow Gauge Railroad on Saturday, October 17, 2026, from 10:00 a.m. to 1:00 p.m.
Here’s the challenge:
Gather a team of 10 and put your strength to the test by pulling a diesel locomotive 15 feet down the track to compete for the fastest time.
The Durango Police Department will be there, and we’re inviting the community to join us. Businesses, gyms, service clubs, schools, friend groups, City departments, and neighboring agencies: this is your chance to build a team, show up, and see if you can out-pull DPD.
Registration is free, but each team must raise at least $500 to compete.
Every dollar fuels Special Olympics Colorado's mission, helping provide free year-round sports, health screenings, and leadership programs for more than 30,000 athletes across the state.

Save the Date: DEA Drug Take Back Day
Mark your calendar. DEA National Prescription Drug Take Back Day returns Saturday, October 24, from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m.
Bring your unused or expired medications to either Durango Police Department location for safe, anonymous disposal:

We’ll also be accepting donations for Manna Durango, including non-spoiled canned goods and hygiene products.

NATIONAL PREPAREDNESS MONTH MAY BE ENDING. YOUR PLAN SHOULDN’T.
We rely on our phones for just about everything. Contacts. Maps. Weather. Medical information. Directions.
But what happens when the battery dies, service disappears, or the network is overloaded?
Before September wraps up, take a few minutes to build a backup plan:
• Keep a charged power bank and charging cables handy
• Write down important phone numbers
• Choose a family meeting location
• Pick an out-of-area contact everyone knows
• Talk about where you’ll go if you need to evacuate
• Make sure children know who to call, where to go, and who they can trust
• Keep important information somewhere other than your phone
Technology is incredibly useful. A plan that only works when technology works isn’t much of a plan.
National Preparedness Month ends this week, but preparedness is a year-round job.
Build the plan. Talk about it. Then make sure everyone in your household knows it.

Congratulations to the graduates of our 25th Citizens’ Police Academy!
Week after week, you made room in your schedules to learn what the Durango Police Department is about. Along the way, the academy covered de-escalation, dispatch, drones, crime scene investigations, DUI investigations, and more, combining classroom learning with hands-on scenarios.
But this post is about more than what you learned. It is about the time you chose to give.
We know you could have spent those evenings with family, catching up at home, or simply taking a break. Instead, you spent them getting to know your police department. Thank you for your curiosity, your questions, and your willingness to learn about the responsibilities and decisions that come with serving this community.
We hope you will keep the conversations going with your friends and family. Share what you learned, what surprised you, and what the experience was like. Your perspective can help others better understand their police department, too.
You came to get to know us. We’re grateful we got to know you, too.
