Cast iron secret: coals cook in hot spots, not a perfect circle—so rotate your skillet every few minutes for consistent browning.
Why it happens:
• Coals vary (size, age, airflow), so heat hits in uneven patches
• Wind or a slightly sloped fire ring can make one side run hotter
• Cast iron holds heat, but it evens out over time—not instantly
Try this simple fix:
1) Preheat 5–10 minutes until a water drop dances and oil shimmers (not smokes)
2) Spread ashed-over coals in a layer just wider than your skillet
3) Quarter-turn the pan every 2–4 minutes (5–10 for longer cooks like cornbread)
Bonus: bank coals to one side for two-zone heat—sear on the hot side, finish on the cool side.
Campfire pro move: keep the food in place (steak, chicken skin-side down) and rotate the pan instead—better crust, fewer “one-side charred” surprises.

Sticky foil packets are the fastest way to lose your glaze and half your dinner. One tiny fix: line your foil packet with parchment paper first.
Why parchment + foil works:
- No “foil welding” with fish skin, teriyaki, BBQ, or lemony marinades
- Cleaner unwrap, better texture, and your sauce stays on the food (not the foil)
- Bonus: parchment keeps acidic foods from sitting directly on aluminum
How to build the nonstick packet (easy camp/grill/oven method):
1) Lay down foil (12–16")
2) Add a slightly smaller piece of parchment on top
3) Put food on the parchment, add a light coat of sauce (don’t overdo the liquid)
4) Tuck parchment edges in, then seal the foil tight (double-fold the seams)
Quick ideas to try:
- Lemon + dill salmon with a few lemon rounds underneath
- Teriyaki veggie mix (zucchini, peppers, onions, mushrooms)
- Honey-garlic shrimp + broccoli (open at the end for a quick char)
Tip: Keep temps moderate (many parchments are rated around 425°F) and make sure no parchment is sticking out near direct flame.

Wind rule check: what’s your awning cutoff—15–20 mph, or do you go by gusts?
A simple “wind rule” is like an insurance policy for your RV. Most awning damage happens fast—one surprise gust can bend arms, rip fabric, or even stress the mounting points on your rig.
Why it fails (so the rule sticks):
- Awnings act like sails: wind gets under the fabric and creates lift
- Gusts are the real enemy: a calm average can hide a sudden 25–35 mph hit
- Rain + wind multiplies load (pooling + a gust = leverage)
Easy wind rule options (pick one and stick to it):
- Conservative: in at 12–15 mph sustained or 20–25 mph gusts
- Common: in at 15–20 mph sustained or 25–30 mph gusts
- Higher risk: in at 20+ mph sustained or 30+ mph gusts
Tip: set your rule based on gusts, not just the average.
My “don’t-think-twice” checklist:
- Leaving camp, even for a quick store run → awning in
- Before bed if gusts are forecast to climb → awning in
- If fabric starts popping, arms clunk, or rain turns gusty → awning in

Stop guessing at the dump station—use your eyes, not your tank sensors. Do you use a clear sewer elbow so you can confirm the rinse runs clear before disconnecting?
Why it’s a game-changer:
• You can actually see when the black-tank rinse is done (not “mostly” done)
• You’re less likely to leave behind residue that leads to odor, clogs, and sensor misreads
• You’ll spot problems early if the flow never really clears
A simple, repeatable dump + rinse sequence:
1) Dump black tank first
2) Close the valve, rinse, then dump again (short fill-and-dump cycles work better than rinsing with the valve open the whole time)
3) Repeat until the clear elbow shows consistently clear flow (no obvious particles)
4) Dump gray tank last to help chase and rinse the hose
Quick “avoid the mess” reminders:
• Twist-lock connections fully so the elbow stays seated
• Keep a good hose slope (low spots can trap material and make “clear” misleading)
• Use dedicated gloves and a dedicated rinse hose—never your fresh-water hose
What’s your must-have sewer setup for travel days at Junction West Durango Riverside Resort—clear elbow or no?
