Dear Colorado Timberline Academy Family,

After careful consideration and much reflection, we must share difficult news. Due to ongoing financial challenges and declining enrollment, Colorado Timberline Academy will not be open for the 2026–2027 school year. This decision was not made quickly or easily.

Like many institutions, CTA has been hit hard by the intersection of two major financial pressures:

Declining Enrollment: Over the past few years, we have seen fewer students joining our ranks, leading to smaller class sizes and lower tuition revenue. We understand that educational choices have changed, but this trend has drastically affected our financial reality.

Rising Costs: Concurrently, the cost of providing a high-quality, comprehensive education—including competitive salaries for faculty, facilities maintenance, insurance, vehicle replacements and upkeep, gas, utilities, and updated technology—has increased significantly, driven by inflationary pressures.

Despite our best efforts to find alternative revenue streams, streamline administrative operations, and secure philanthropic support, we could not bridge the gap between our operating costs and our revenue. Continued operation would have resulted in financial insolvency, jeopardizing our ability to fulfill our obligations to current students and staff.

Looking Forward

Our focus now is on a respectful and orderly transition. A custodian of records will keep all records, transcripts, and diplomas secure after the official closure date. More details to follow.

While the school will not operate for the upcoming academic year, we remain hopeful about the future of Colorado Timberline Academy. The mission and spirit that have guided the school for fifty years continue to matter deeply to many people, and there is a shared desire to explore what the next chapter might one day look like.

We understand that this news is disappointing and that CTA holds a special place in the hearts of many of you. Please feel free to reach out with questions and concerns, or if you just want to process this. We will keep the community updated as we know more.

Lastly, we express our deepest gratitude for those of you who have donated time, money, resources, and assets to help CTA throughout the years. Your generous contributions enhanced the daily lives of both staff and students. Thank you so much for your support.

Sincerely,

The Board

When families search for boarding schools in Colorado, they are often looking for more than academics. They are looking for balance, structure, resilience, and a place where their teen will be truly known.

Colorado offers a unique combination of outdoor education, smaller school communities, and strong college preparation without hyper-competitive pressure.

At Colorado Timberline Academy, that environment is intentionally built into everyday life.

If your teen needs a reset, a challenge, or a more personal approach to learning, Colorado might be exactly the right place.

From outdoor adventures to quiet hammock breaks, CTA’s campus gives students space to recharge and find their own rhythm throughout the day.

More families are choosing smaller boarding schools, not because they are thinking smaller, but because they are thinking differently.

Today’s parents are prioritizing connection over prestige, personalization over standardization, and long-term growth over short-term performance. They want environments where their child will be known, supported, and challenged in ways that build confidence and independence.

At Colorado Timberline Academy, small is intentional. With personalized academics, experiential learning, and a close-knit boarding community, students are given the structure and support they need to truly thrive.

If you’re exploring whether a smaller boarding experience may be the right fit for your student, it may be time to start that conversation.

Not your typical school day.

Three classes.
Fresh powder.
San Juan peaks in the background.

At Colorado Timberline Academy, Ski Bloc isn’t just a reward. It’s part of the curriculum. Because resilience isn’t built in a lecture hall. It’s built on chairlifts, in cold air, and in moments where you decide to drop in anyway.

Small classes. Outdoor education.
Confidence that follows them far beyond high school.

This is CTA.
