A little piece of the presentation I heard last week in Prague by Professor James McKenna⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀

“The present pediatric sleep paradigm was never based upon any kind of scientific research on who infants are and what they need (and why) ;⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀

Rather,⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀

the original paradigm emerged from a few mainly white male physicians ( who never took care care of their own infants) and knew nothing about human evolution or infant development and inadvertently substituted their own social ideologies and ethnocentric values for empirical scientific studies about what constitutes normal human infant sleep⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀

Did it matter? Yes, it did!⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀

• The cultural dismantling of these three fundamental components of normal, healthy infant sleep i.e. social sleep, breastfeeding, and supine sleep,⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
• Creating three well known known significant risk factors for SIDS:⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀

⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀

• From breastfeeding to formula-cow milk;⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀

• From supine sleep (to promote deep sleep and less arousals)⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀

• Leading to the deaths of approximately 400,000 Euro American infants from a “mysterious killer” the sudden infant death syndrome (SIDS)⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
