Memorial Day, originally named Decoration Day in response to Americans' adorning graves with flowers and wreaths, emerged as a holiday in the US following the Civil War. In the many decades since, Delawareans have commemorated those who fought and died in conflicts such as the American Revolutionary War, the Civil War, World War I and II, and more.
Across the state, Delawareans have marked this holiday with community gatherings, parades, and opportunities to honor surviving veterans who fought alongside those no longer with us. Learn more about these men and women who served through the Delaware Public Archives' Military Service Records Index and the Delaware's Role in World War II collection.
