Once the headstone has been cut and shaped, it is polished to create a smooth surface. Stones are polished using machines with varying grit levels that smooth down the surface, followed by aluminum or tin oxide powder that gives the stones a shiny finish.

When grief makes everything around you feel grey, use your family and friends as a “comfort blanket” to warm you up. They want to help and support you, so let them. Sharing tea, a simple meal, or even watching a movie together can bring you some small measure of comfort through feeling their love.

That phrase, though it means well, can make a grieving person feel like it’s their responsibility now to think of a way they need help, then to reach back out to ask for the help - and in the end, they rarely do. Next time, when offering support to a grieving friend, be specific. Cook and deliver a home cooked meal, come over and clean their house, or purchase a meaningful memorial gift in memory of their loved one.
