🐷 Remembering Wilbur on National Pig Day 🐷

Quite a few people recognize this painting but not so many know the story behind it.

I discovered Wilbur on a cold, wet winter night 15 years ago. The trailer he was being taken to slaughter in crashed, spilling Wilbur and his trailer mates onto a busy highway. I heard about the accident on the radio and drove out to where it happened. What I saw on the scene was terrible – pigs were being hit by oncoming cars; others were being shot by police officers.

I pulled up alongside one of the pigs and as I’d just been grocery shopping, used some vegan yogurt to coax him into the back of my blue Subaru Forester (the car featured in the painting). I got him in just as the police were approaching to shoot him. One of them shook their fist at us as we sped past them. If Wilbur’s hooves had been designed differently, I’m pretty sure he would’ve given them the finger.

Back at my place and faced with now housing a 250 lb pig, I called up my friends to figure out what to do. I had 2 foals rescued from the PMU (pregnant mare urine) industry at the time so thankfully had bales (and a large shop). My friends and I got to work creating a large bale structure for Wilbur to sleep in. We soon realized though that his preference was for human-sized blankets and sleeping bags! We gave him a meal of fruits and vegetables along with his treasured vegan yogurt which he relished before falling into a deep sleep.

Wilbur became something of a celebrity in his home province, holding long conversations with everyone he met. He was a sweet and gentle giant of a pig.

It was a difficult decision but ultimately, I had to move both him and the foals as I started receiving death threats against them and myself (primarily over Emily, a "dairy" cow I discovered at a livestock auction). Thankfully, Wilbur absolutely loved his adoptive home and family and I’ll be forever grateful to them for giving him a full and happy life with his girlfriend Honey and a yard full of friends.

Wilbur passed away peacefully in his sleep 9 years ago. He feels special and he is but every single pig is just as unique and special as Wilbur was. We just need more days like today to recognize it.

I just finished watching the documentary, “Pignorant.” Such a brilliant, and well-made film! Joey Carbstrong risked his life more than once to make this film.

I actually felt I was right there with Joey and Dan Sheppard, two extremely brave and determined individuals as they went about getting the much needed footage.

I hope everyone will watch this most excellent film! Bravo to Joey and his crew for getting the message out there!
