Today, B shift was called to go the extra mile. Around 11 am this morning, multiple reports of a small kitten stuck in a storm drain around 1080 Hwy 98. The crew accessed the drain and firefighter Fuller entered to rescue the kitten. Cold, hungry, and scared, the kitten was brought out safely! It was tended to by our paramedics and even adopted by one of our Captains! Great job to B shift for going the extra mile to certainly save a helpless animal!

At our last Commissioners' Meeting, Jeremy Eschman was recognized for an outstanding act to save a 7 year old from Drowning. Captain David Morrison put him in for recognition from the District. His Letter below:

"At 10:45am on 04/29/2026, Mr Jeremy Eschman, the maintenance worker at the Preserve Apartments, effected a water rescue on a pediatric patient, making a great impact on the patient’s survival.

While performing his duties like every other shift and making his rounds, Mr Eschman witnessed a 7 year old child begin to display immediate signs of distress in the lake behind the apartments. Within seconds, Mr Eschman rushed to the child, dove into the lake and effected a water rescue, removing the child from the water and immediately providing first aid care while Destin Fire Rescue Paramedics and EMS personnel were being dispatched.

Upon the arrival of Destin Fire Paramedics, the pediatric patient was noted to be awake, alert and breathing appropriately due to the swift actions by Mr Eschman. OCEMS was able to transport the stable patient, with a positive expected outcome.

Through Mr Eschman’s Valiance and Courage, a difference was made in this child’s life."

He received a Life Saving Award from our Fire Chief and Board of Commissioners and a coveted Chief's Coin for outstanding service to the District.

It's citizen's like this that make our community so special! Thank You Jeremy!
