The R&R Club held our last outing of the school year with a rainy day visit to Blakesley Cutting Horses training facility in Augusta, Kansas. Mr. Dirk Blakesley and crew took time to show us how these amazing animals are trained to become champion competition cutting horses from start to finish!

Dirk Blakesley is a professional cutting horse trainer and competitor and has graciously offered a tour of his facilities in Augusta, Kansas and some insight into cutting horse training and competition. Cutting horses are my favorite and this is a great opportunity we wanted to make sure we squeezed in this year. Unfortunately, due to his show and competition schedule, he is not available on the weekends. PLEASE PLEASE LET ME KNOW ASAP IF YOU NEED A RIDE!!! (Parents, please let me know if you can drive others.)

DNMS students receive life lessons with calf care The plan to nurse a newly born calf didn't work out the way a group of Derby North Middle School students wanted it to, but then again, sometimes life doesn't

Today’s club meeting guest was a surprise for everyone. Just hours before the meeting Mr. McBride discovered a heifer calf that was newly born and abandoned in the rain. He loaded her up and brought her to the meeting.
Club members named the premature calf Stormy, and then began cleaning her up, blow drying her and trying to help her take a bottle of colostrum. We eventually had to “drench” feed the little calf using a tube through her esophagus to her stomach.
We have some developmental concerns but are hopeful for a full recovery in the coming weeks. We all enjoyed giving this sweet girl lots of love and care.

We had such a fun meeting earlier this week! Mr. McBride brought in a variety of tools and equipment he uses to “work” cattle. Club members tried to guess what the tool was called and how it was used. Lots of new knowledge was shared with lots of fun guesses coming from the kids!

Thank you to Dr. Brian Hodes DMV for the wonderful tour of Hodes Veterinary Health Center in Rosehill. While touring the facility, students learned how the center has been created to ensure safety for both large and small animals and learned about all the different equipment on site to treat various illnesses and injuries of all types of animals.
