NEW ALBUM OUT NOW: http://smarturl.it/ax2crucible

A duo adding new life and complexity to the concept of a family band...
…husband and wife Seth and China Kent of Alright Alright create orchestral folk for the open-minded and poetry for the broken-hearted. Though their songs often bear a deep sense of tradition, Alright Alright aren’t afraid to experiment with boundaries, testing the limits of genre and expectations for content. The pair share a genuine love of words, evidenced by their tendency to play with a mix of simple and unique language in elegantly rhymed lines: Muscatine, Muscatine / Why you gotta be so mean? / Pearl of the riverside / in the flood where my brother died. They are often inspired by the rich history of places they visit as well as by familiar haunts in their hometown of Denver, Colorado. From southern industrial towns to street signs to abandoned cars on I-70, there is a sense of rootedness that lends depth and dimension to their songwriting. Yet there’s also a striking vulnerability present, an openness and willingness to connect that draws fans from around the world to reach out and feel held by their music. Part of the appeal of Alright Alright’s sound comes from the contrasting vocal styles: Seth’s Dylan-esque warble feels like a throwback to a brighter, purer moment in folk music’s past, while China’s lush alto tempers that brightness with a husky richness (imagine grey skies shifting over cornfields). At times direct and innocent à la Sondre Lerche, other times intricate and vast, their music combines hints of great folk duos like Simon and Garfunkel (in the lighthearted, layered melodies of “Trying to be Free”) with moments of complete originality. The songs incorporate classic folk and Americana elements as well as more pared-down moments of fragile piano. Comfortable in both love and grief, Alright Alright’s music is as comforting and as surprising as family life can be. “I think I write music for myself, to heal myself, and I write music for people who need it,” says China. Seth agrees: “It’s an act of identity and empathy.”

For Alright Alright, music making and family life are so intertwined that it’s sometimes hard to differentiate. Seth and China each prefer to write songs in relative solitude, then trade those distilled ideas with each other, allowing the song to grow in the other person’s hands. “We feel lucky to have the level of trust it takes to do this... to entrust your creative work to another person takes more than love-- it takes an enormous amount of respect.” While China often writes “from the outside looking in,” touching on the struggle to own and exert creative power, Seth’s writing tackles the subject from a slightly different angle: “I am constantly reminding myself to belong. That I do belong. Yes, I belong.” Sometimes their songs feel like introductory anthems designed to remind listeners that they are part of this world, and they are welcome here. Summer's Wane and Words of Wisdom - https://mailchi.mp/26c9ec7468f0/summers-wane-and-words-of-wisdom
It is so easy to get lost in the commerce of it all, to feel the pressure to cater to algorithms, to bend to the will of the tech overlords. But we are mere flesh and blood. We are such tender, silly glorious creatures. Our lives are mere breaths in a long wide story arch, and I refuse to flatten myself into a 2-dimensional product to be transacted and exchanged in a marketplace of thieves and greed.

This is a hard thing to write and a hard thing to put on social media. For the most part I feel that things like this are private matters for the family involved. But in this case we have opened our home to so many people and this sad news is about a part of the spirit of this place and the chief welcoming committee.

Sadly, Poppy, our beloved sprinting lightening bolt of joy Wirehaird Pointer, was able to escape our GPS fence. It seems likely that she was struck and killed by a car yesterday afternoon.

She was the queen of this place, a devoted animal watching over all who were here, yet fiercely protecting when it was needed. Every visitor was greeted with a smile and she exuded love, even to people who “weren’t dog people.” She took the job of checking in on every person, every performer, at Songs at Summerstead to heart, often cuddling with numerous new friends in the process.

She could run faster and jump higher and smile more than any dog I’ve known before. She was literally excited to wake up, eat dinner, have popcorn, drink water, go to the barn, hop in the truck and any other activity. Given how lazy I (Seth) was about her training, she was a remarkable bird hunter. She would nap with you all day if you were sick on the couch, she would chase a ball till she was too hot, get in the creek to cool off, and then chase a ball again. She would try to steal food or beg popcorn from those who came to the concerts in our lawn. She believed it was her job to keep birds of prey and coyotes away, and she loved my wife and children more completely than I could have believed

I wrote this email to all of our email subscribers yesterday and thought it was exactly the kind of thing I also want to post on social media...if you're in Denver on June 6 you should come to our first Songs at Summerstead concert of the season!!

If I could wish anything for you today, and I can, I would wish for you a blessedly uncomplicated stretch of time. No confusing texts to decipher, no calendars to Tetris, no barrage of news or jump-scares from that tiny glowing device in your pocket. I wish for you shades of green. Many of them. Such green verdant abundance that you forget yourself for a spell and melt ever so softly into a blanket on a lawn...or in a hammock...or a couch near an open window. I wish for you dappled sunshine and birdsong and the slow gentle care of the living world.

Isn't it wonderful that we can wish such beauty for one another? I have the double blessing of being able not only to wish these things for you, but to share some of that delicious green with you via the concert series that I curate in our meadow down by the creek. You should come.

Our first show of the season is June 6, and we are so happy to present the amazing Colorado ensemble, Sturtz. If you don't know about these guys, you will soon, because they are on the up and up and they are just so great. They've been lauded by NPR and they are finishing off their spring tour in our meadow!

About Sturtz:
The group is serene and folksy, with melodic vocals soaring over the lower string instrumentals. Sturtz released their second studio album Hyacinth in September 2024, and they're hard at work writing songs for their next album now. When they’re not playing music, you’ll probably find the members of Sturtz milling flour, gardening, roasting coffee, or honing in on their photography skills.

I've gone all hog wild and booked 4 bands this summer (twice as many as I have the past 2 summers!). I don't really know what's wrong with me, except I have this overwhelming desire to share the goodness I've discovered in meadow and music with you all.

I know many of you are far away, but know that the invitation to these magical musical meadow evenings always stands -- tell your Colorado friends, or come visit when you can!

All my love
china

A Cozy November Show, and an Update! - https://mailchi.mp/effe0e69dfad/a-cozy-november-show-and-an-update

Right now, this Autumn of 2025, marks the 5-year anniversary of the release of Crucible, the album we released in infamous 2020. Time has simultaneously moved at a snail’s pace and flown since then, and we are in a whole new era, of course. We are Revisiting the songs on that record for our show at Swallow Hill on November 14th! We hope you will join us (also China will play a few tracks off her solo record including the After Prom song - IYKYK)

hi :)

Life has been a lot lately, hasn’t it? I always feel like I’m getting these newsletters out far later than I intended. Does anyone else feel like that? Always a little behind, a little late? Well, I suppose you’re in good company. :)
