I don’t talk about this side of owning a craft store very often.

Most of what you see on Instagram is the fun stuff: new yarn arrivals, packed workshops, finished projects, and community events. And don’t get me wrong… I am incredibly proud of all of those things.

But behind every small business is a human being trying to figure it out as they go. As I start my second year in business, I was feeling reflective of what I am really feeling. And I love being transparent with yall, so here’s some of my the heavy things on my heart lately…

There are days I worry nobody will sign up for a class.

Days when I feel completely overwhelmed by everything that needs to get done.

Days when I wonder if I’m making the right inventory decisions, delegating enough, delegating too much, or if I’m even cut out for this whole business owner thing.

And there are definitely days when I wish I could just sit in the living room and work on a project without anyone assuming I’m on the clock. 😅

The truth is, owning Makeshift is one of the most rewarding things I’ve ever done, but it’s also one of the hardest.

So today I thought I’d share a few honest confessions from behind the scenes.

If you’ve ever supported the store, taken a class, brought a friend, left a review, or simply walked through our doors: thank you. You’ve helped make all of this possible. ❤️

🚨 SET YOUR ALARMS 🚨

Our very first garment Crochet-A-Long goes on sale Saturday, May 31st at 10:00am! ☀️🧶✨

This summer we’ll be making a made-to-measure crochet top using Magic, our favorite lightweight 100% pima cotton yarn. Whether you want yours striped, color blocked, bold and colorful, soft and neutral, fitted, oversized, or somewhere in between, we’ll help you create a top that feels completely you.

And before anyone says “I could never make a garment…” 👀

That’s exactly why we’re doing this as a Crochet-A-Long.

Your $125 registration includes:
☀️ 4 balls of Yarnalia Magic yarn
🧵 An exclusive Makeshift-designed printed pattern
🎁 CAL-exclusive goodies
✨ Customization and color planning help
🪡 Ongoing support, troubleshooting, and accountability

Plus the opportunity to attend our optional Kickoff Workshop on June 21st where we’ll tackle gauge swatching, measurements, fit, and all the scary garment stuff together. And optional August 2nd finishing workshop answering all your burning questions about blocking cotton and weaving in ends that don’t felt.

This isn’t just buying a pattern.

It’s joining a community of people all working toward the same goal: actually finishing a wearable and proudly saying, “Thanks, I made it.” 💖

Oh, and we intentionally designed this pattern to be non-gendered because great handmade clothes should be for everyone. 🌈🥰

✨ Registration opens Saturday, May 31st at 10:00am.
⏰ Set your alarms.
🧶 Limited seats available.

🌭✨ GLIZZY WEEK 2026 ✨🌭

You asked for summer workshops… unfortunately I heard “wiener wiener wiener”.

From June 29 – July 4, we’re fully embracing the glizzy lifestyle with an entire week of hot dog themed workshops including cross stitch, embroidery, crochet, punch needle, bargello, beaded bag charms, and more. Yes, this is real. Yes, we are serving Costco hot dogs. Yes, there are prizes for crafting the most glizzies.

Expect:
🌭 exclusive Makeshift swag
🌭 parking lot hot dogs
🌭 chaotic summer camp energy
🌭 tiny hot dog accessories
🌭 “got that dog in me” levels of commitment

This might be the most unhinged thing I’ve ever done… which means it will also be my greatest accomplishment.

Class booking opens MAY 31 at 10am and some of these workshops have very limited seats. Start mentally preparing now, and don’t forget to practice your jaw stretches.

JUNE AT MAKESHIFT 🌈✨🧵

Apparently having a pride flag in the window is “divisive ideology.” So naturally… we planned an entire month of rainbow crafts about it. 💖💁🏻‍♀️

Special shout out to the Google reviewer named Corgi for inspiring our celebration of International Corgi Day this month. Nothing says community quite like accidentally becoming part of the bit. 🫡🐾🏳️‍🌈🏳️‍⚧️

Our June workshop calendar is officially here and packed with Pride Month classes, cozy community nights, beginner workshops, and some of the most fun projects we’ve ever made.

This month includes:
🌈 Pride Flag Bead Soup
🏳️‍🌈 Cross Stitched Pride Flags with OVER 40 different mini pride flag patterns to choose from
🧵 Reverse Appli-GAY
💖 Pronoun Felt Brooches
🪩 Swiftie Day: Reputation Edition
🖤 Emo Embroidery: Fall Out Boy is finally going down swinging
☕ Gilmore Girls embroidery night - IYKYK 🥃
🌿 Litha Celebration including our ANNUAL TRADITION of making flower crowns to celebrate midsummer in style
🧶 Crochet-A-Long kickoff for our first ever Made-To-Measure Top!!!
🌭 and the announcement of Glizzy Week™ is coming soon so stay tuned!!!

Whether you’re here to learn a new craft, find your people, work on your WIP in peace, or just spend a few hours somewhere that feels welcoming and warm, that’s what Makeshift is for!!

We are really proud of the kind of community this space has become. Loudly, openly, unapologetically proud. 🌈

Classes open Sunday, May 17th at 10am ⏰ Some events WILL sell out quickly, so don’t wait too long to grab your seat.
