ARTS & LIFE: Local band prepares for album debut, fusing jazz, folk and country to embrace ‘American music’

In the woods outside of Denton, at recording studio Echo Labs, local band The Tabasco Birds recorded their first album where they attempted to form a “sound collage” through live effects like radio, clapping, hooting and even a spinning bike wheel.

The Tabasco Birds are releasing their 10-song debut album, “Cosmic American Music,” on March 6. Compiled of the band’s oldest written songs, with most of them being written by some of the members in high school, the upcoming LP is described as being full of “The Tabasco Birds classics.”

“It's developed a lot since the demos,” singer and band member Chris Smith, 22, said. “It kind of feels like this nice time capsule of growth. […] Everyone shines really well in it. I feel like the theme, in my head at least, is this is our classic debut, something that we can look back on and be proud of.”
