55 years ago today, October 2, 1971, Soul Train premiered in national syndication. Created, hosted and executive produced by Don Cornelius, the music and dance program featured performances by R&B, soul, dance pop and hip hop artists, along with funk, jazz, disco and gospel acts, while its dancers made the Soul Train Line a signature of the show.

Cornelius launched the program locally on Chicago station WCIU on August 17, 1970, before taking it national the following year, when production moved to Los Angeles. He hosted until 1993, and the show went on to produce more than 1,100 episodes. Later opening sequences billed it as the longest running first run, nationally syndicated program in American television history, a title it held until Entertainment Tonight passed it in 2016.

The final first run episode aired March 27, 2006, after which a rerun package, The Best of Soul Train, aired for two more years. BET Networks acquired the rights to the Soul Train brand, library and related events in 2016, including the annual Soul Train Music Awards.

Remembering Singer/ Songwriter Jim Croce. He died in a plane crash in Natchitoches, Louisiana 50 years ago today on September 20, 1973, after performing to a small college crowd at Prather Coliseum on the campus of Northwestern State University. It was rumored that narcotic officers were brought into the area of the concert to search for drugs and w**d. After the concert, Jim Croce and band members quickly departed to the runway to board the plane. The plane took off quickly as it had elevation issues and clipped a row of pecan trees and crashed killing everyone aboard. Jim Croce was a great musical storyteller that we will never forget and passed away during the height of his musical career. Jim Croce was born on January 10, 1943.
Rest in peace, Jim Croce.
