The GFRC rock panels and boulder castings from Rock-Scapes Design are cast from the faces of actual natural rock. Not approximations. Not stylized interpretations. Real rock surfaces, captured in mold form, reproduced in glass fiber reinforced concrete.

The mold library is one of the largest in the country — panels across six series (A, B, C, D, E, and L), with hundreds of options. The thickness runs 5/8” to 3/4”. At 9 to 10 pounds per square foot, the panels are light enough to move with a standard crew.

The waterfall at the hotel pool that looks like it was poured from a single mold. The boulders along the highway median, uniform and gray, shaped vaguely like rocks but feeling like nothing at all. The backyard feature someone paid real money for that, ten feet away, looked convincingly like concrete.

You’ve seen it. Most people have. And it’s the reason the words “artificial rock” make a lot of homeowners pause.

That skepticism is completely reasonable. The problem is it’s aimed at the wrong thing.

What Studying Rock Actually Looks Like

Beau Bradley has been doing this since the late 1980s, starting at the Fort Worth Zoo — one of his first encounters with artificial rock at serious scale. He wasn’t just learning technique. He was learning to read rock the way a geologist does. Where fault lines form. How erosion moves across different surface types. Why sediment layers the way it does, and how that layering shows up in the finished face of a cliff or a boulder field.

Thirty-four years later, that’s still the starting point for every Rock-Scapes project.

Their mold library — more than 275 rock surface molds and 150 boulder molds — doesn’t come from drawings or approximations. It comes from real geological specimens. Real fracture patterns. Real sedimentary layers pressed directly into urethane and preserved. When a finished Rock-Scapes surface is textured, it’s textured with the impression of actual stone.

That’s a different process than most people imagine when they think “artificial rock.”

The coloring.

Natural rock is never one color. It’s a stack of them — base mineral tone, iron oxide staining, calcium deposits, biological growth, UV bleaching, the deeper shadow where moisture collects at the base. Each layer sits differently on the surface. The crevices hold pigment the way real stone holds mineral stain. The ridges catch light the way exposed rock faces do.
