Our brother Malcolm-Jamal Warner was brilliant. Most of us simply remember him as Theo Huxtable—funny, charming, and safe. But what I witnessed in his performance of Art In Motion was so much more than that. This wasn’t entertainment. This was war paint in the form of poetry. Recorded at the Minnesota Orchestra’s Juneteenth Celebration in 2023, Warner didn’t just read a poem—he dropped a bomb. With each line, he exposed the raw truth about our people’s exploitation, our genius, and our fight for survival in a world that feeds off our culture but fears our consciousness. His words were sharp. Precise. Radical. This wasn’t some polite spoken word for claps and snaps. This was revolutionary art—a poetic rifle aimed at the heart of America’s hypocrisy. And now, hearing this performance again in the current climate, it’s even more clear: Brother Malcolm wasn’t trying to impress you—he was trying to wake you up. We sleep on our legends until it’s too late. And when they speak truth, we don’t always listen—until the echoes grow louder in death or in absence. But Art In Motion stands as proof: Warner was never just acting. He was activating. Let this be a reminder to stop boxing our people into what makes you comfortable.
