The Illinois Central Freight Station stands on busy East Eldorado Street on November 9, 1945, 78 years ago today. World War 2 has ended two months ago and servicemen from around the world are returning home.

Boxcars positioned along the siding on the east side of the station hold goods to be unloaded, while a truck has backed into the opposite side to carry the load the last mile to the destination. A decade before the construction of the interstate highway system, most goods still move by rail.

Someone has propped their motorcycle along the north end of the building next to Eldorado Street. This building at 815 E Eldorado still stands in excellent condition.

The freight station stood on the north side of Eldorado until 1900, when the Illinois Central constructed a new passenger station there. The freight station was dissassembled and rebuilt, piece by piece, on the opposite side of the street!
