Decatur Montessori School
https://www.decaturmontessori.com/open-house "The child's true constructive energy, a dynamic power, has remained unnoticed for thousands of years.
Just as men have trodden the earth, and later tilled its surface, without thought for the immense wealth hidden in its depths, so the men of our day make progress after progress in civilized life, without noticing the treasures that lie hidden in the psychic world of infancy. "
- Maria Montessori
Certification:
AMI certified
Philosophy:
Decatur Montessori School is dedicated to providing children 6 weeks to 6+ years old with an environment in which they can develop their human potential to the highest degree. With love and respect, we assist children in growing into happy and well-balanced adults. Program Characteristics:
Decatur Montessori School emphasizes the mental as well as academic development of children by following the original principles of Maria Montessori, the founder of the Montessori system of education. All day, all year around program
Staff:
The staff at our school works with parents as a team to offer children nurturing and loving programs. Most of the staff members including the teachers and the director, are AMI certified teachers. Other staff members have a clear understanding of Montessori philosophy and method of education. In addition, we send all staff members for appropriate on-site training and to various workshops around the area for continuing education. Importance of a Second Language:
Decatur Montessori School has native Spanish speakers in each classroom that speak Spanish to our children all the time. Learning Spanish as a second language at an early age will help our children become truly proficient in the language. Studies have shown that children with a second language score higher on standardized tests and adapt better to different cultures and environments. In addition, learning a second language will give your children an advantage as they grow and compete in an increasingly challenging world. Infant Community:
The Infant Community is designed to meet the needs of children that are about 8 weeks to about 16 months of age. At this age, children unconsciously observe and absorb everything that their senses pick up from the environment. In Montessori terms, the "Absorbent Mind" is at work. Toddler Community:
The Toddler Community is designed to meet the needs of children that are about 16 months to about three years of age. At toddler age, children work hard to learn the language of their society. They also work hard to perfect their walking skill and other body movement. Additionally, children at this age have a great desire to become independent and help themselves. Children's House:
The Children’s House is designed to meet the needs of children who are about 2 years 10 months to 6+ years of age. At this age, children still observe and absorb everything in their environment. However, now the child is conscious of what he is learning.

The Value of Wet and Dry Pouring
These concrete skills foster independence, fine motor control, self-correction, eye-hand coordination, and concentration.
Every part of the pouring process requires careful manipulation. The child must learn to grasp the pitchers in a certain way. They must control how much they tilt the pitcher, affecting the amount and velocity of the pour. And if a child spills, they learn to clean up, experiencing firsthand cause and effect and the importance of controlling their movements.

Community Spotlight: Children's House (3-6):
The Importance of the Kindergarten Year
In the final year, five-year-olds become classroom leaders after spending two years in the same class. They should feel confident by now and can help younger students with what they've learned. This extra year helps them get even better at what they know, become leaders, and feel more sure of themselves—a wait that's totally worth it!
