Rising Sun Development Center
Who Are We:
Rising Sun Development Center(RSDC) is a community organization that specializes in Community Development.
We build strong communities through economic empowerment, education, resource development, and cultivation of youth. One of our primary focus demographic groups is African American communities. African American communities are at risk, and show the most evidence of being systematically neglected. RSDC combats the issues that confront African American communities and prevent them from successfully navigating in this society, through a culturally relevant and resource oriented approach.
Many thanks to Brother Salim Cox for his generous support of Rising Sun Development Center’s T.R.U.E. Jamaica Aid initiative and our ongoing hurricane recovery efforts in partnership with Humanity Ova Vanity (HOV).
His donations are directly helping hurricane survivors in Jamaica recover and rebuild. Children who have been unable to return to school received books to share and read collectively, helping them continue learning despite the disruption. Adults received single-burner stoves so families can prepare meals while living without fully functioning homes and kitchens.
Brother Salim’s financial contribution also helped support the Community Resilience Hub in Petersfield, where RSDC and our partners at HOV are working alongside local communities to strengthen their capacity to respond, recover, and build greater resilience for the future.
But the work is far from over.
Many families are still without adequate housing. The hurricane intensified an already serious housing crisis, damaging and destroying homes and leaving communities with the difficult task of rebuilding.
RSDC, in partnership with HOV, is preparing to launch another phase of our recovery work: reclaiming wood from trees felled by the hurricane and recycling that timber into usable building materials. This approach can turn storm debris into a resource for rebuilding, reduce waste, and support community-led recovery.
This is what resilience looks like—communities working together and transforming available resources into solutions.
Thank you, Brother Salim Cox, for standing with the people of Jamaica and helping us turn solidarity into action.
