Researchers at Imperial College London and Empa have developed an autonomous fleet of bee-inspired drones capable of 3D printing structures while in flight. The system includes BuilDrones, which extrude building material, and ScanDrones, which scan and verify geometry in real time, achieving 5 mm accuracy. In demonstrations, the drones built foam and cementitious cylinders, showing potential for remote construction and repairs in hard-to-reach or hazardous locations.
