Throwback Wednesday?!? Whaaaat?
20 years ago in May of 1996 , The City of Atlanta was under fire for skirting it’s responsibility to repair it’s sewer system, choosing to pay EPA fines as a cheaper alternative to actually doing repairs to bring the sewer system into compliance with the US Clean Water Act and Georgia Water Quality Act. I made this piece titled “Chattahoochee”, reflecting our City’s addiction to poisoning the state’s waterways and displayed it in a GSU group show at Atlanta City Hall outside the office of then Mayor, now ex-con Bill Campbell. Of course it made no impact. The river suffered, and Atlanta was forced to pay $2.8 million in 1999 and over $1 million in 2001.Today, May 11, 2016 the Atlanta Journal-Constitution published:
Dan Klepal, “Sewage spill fines get initial OK”,
Metro Section page B1.
So it seemed a posting was in order.
