I t was founded by Shanta Phelps, on January 15, 2006 in Decatur, Georgia. DFY is a nonprofit organization in good standing with the IRS. Direction For Youth is a Public Charity organization that allows professional and civic leaders the opportunity to give back to the community.

The professional factor of mentoring engages youth in areas related to education life skills and employment goals. The personal focus areas engages youth in areas related to their personal and family behavior including self worth, self improvement, and family well-being.
