Bilateral DDFT rehab update 🙌🏼

This is a bit of a late post, but 5 months after a client received a diagnosis on her main horse of bilateral DDFT tears, he has been cleared 🎉

During this rehab we took a minimalist approach and during the first half of rehab the horse received 2 treatments per week, after the first vet recheck was done with positive feedback saying the tears were 50% healed, the horse had to be tapered to 1 treatment per week for the 2nd half of the rehab, then at the 2nd recheck around 5 almost 6 months the vet completely cleared him!

I’m beyond excited for my client to have her horse healed and even though we took a modified approach, this horses rehab was still completed in half the time. For those that have ever experienced a DDFT tear you know that those type of rehabs can take up to a year, and those rehabs are usually only 1 tear 😉

This is a testament to consistency. My client knew she couldn’t do a super aggressive rehab program but she knew she could be consistent with a different frequency approach for a longer time span to still achieve the desired results. She stayed on top of the horses care, the horse was able to be turned out, she has been riding him, and he is not only healed but still strong. 💪🏼

My goal is to help clients achieve their goal, this is exactly why I create a minimal, moderate, and aggressive rehabilitation program outlines so each client can choose which fits their budget and timeline!

Equanimity Animal Therapy is now based out of 𝗧𝘂𝗿𝗹𝗼𝗰𝗸, 𝗖𝗔 at a professional facility. We are excited to offer our services in this location and the surrounding areas!

𝐒𝐨𝐥𝐚𝐧𝐨 and 𝐘𝐨𝐥𝐨 county clients, do not stress, 𝙄 𝙖𝙢 𝙨𝙩𝙞𝙡𝙡 𝙢𝙖𝙠𝙞𝙣𝙜 𝙬𝙚𝙚𝙠𝙡𝙮 𝙢𝙪𝙡𝙩𝙞𝙥𝙡𝙚 𝙙𝙖𝙮 𝙩𝙧𝙞𝙥𝙨 𝙩𝙤 𝙩𝙝𝙚 𝙖𝙧𝙚𝙖 to service all of my current clients, but with this change does come a change in availability, so expect to schedule appointments a few weeks in advance if you're not already on a regular rotation.

With this expansion comes some exciting changes, not only will I be taking new clients in the Turlock, CA area, but I can now help service 𝐅𝐫𝐞𝐬𝐧𝐨 𝐂𝐨𝐮𝐧𝐭𝐲 as well, which I constantly get a lot of requests for. Ideally, for clients wanting acuscope services I would like to have a host facility in the Fresno County area to facilitate people hauling in or leaving their horses for the 3 consecutive days of Acuscope treatment, so I can properly start horses within my program then I can make weekly trips to the area. If you would like to be a host please contact me.

Another amazing feature of this move is I can accommodate taking 𝘪𝘯 𝘩𝘰𝘶𝘴𝘦 𝘧𝘶𝘭𝘭 𝘳𝘦𝘩𝘢𝘣𝘪𝘭𝘪𝘵𝘢𝘵𝘪𝘰𝘯𝘴 𝘺𝘦𝘢𝘳 𝘳𝘰𝘶𝘯𝘥. This facility features an indoor arena, outdoor arena, indoor round pen, outdoor round pen, and hot walker. There are employees on site along with the owner and myself to keep eyes on the horses. In house rehabilitations include treatment 4-5x a week and any veterinary prescribed exercise (hand walking etc) or medications. We can accommodate fully getting your horse back into their previous state of work if needed for an additional cost (since we have to pony then ride them). I will only take a 𝐥𝐢𝐦𝐢𝐭𝐞𝐝 amount of in house rehabs, so that I can still accommodate all of my mobile clientele.

And 𝙖𝙣𝙤𝙩𝙝𝙚𝙧 𝙛𝙚𝙖𝙩𝙪𝙧𝙚 is that I will be within 10 minutes of Diamond Bar Arena and also RD Ranch, if there is an event at either of these locations and you would like me to meet you at the event to watch your horse perform and for me to do a manual/visual assessment of them, then please contact me. As long as I am home I can accommodate this. Or if you are a current client and would like treatment after an event held at either of these locations I can come to you or you can haul into our residing facility on your way out.

When I was listening to The Humble Hoof podcast, I heard a statement that resonated with me, “I never regret going too slow in rehab, I do regret going too fast.”

Over my 7 years of operating Equanimity Animal Therapy and then also working in clinical settings before that I’ve seen so many people rush the healing process.

Now, I know what you’re thinking, well doesn't your work accelerate the healing process? Yes, it does. But there's a big difference between me coming onto a case right after the diagnosis when the injury is acute and me coming onto a chronic lameness that has been occurring for an extended period of time, sometimes years. When the injury is still in the acute phase I am very confident in my ability to accelerate the healing process, address any compensatory limbs to reduce overcompensation, and guide the owner through the rehab then helping them gradually return their horse to exercise while working with the overseeing veterinarian’s guidelines. An injury that just occurred is easier to gauge a timeline on than one that has become a chronic issue.

I've witnessed owners chase diagnostics, inject every joint in the body, change the shoeing every cycle, use this supplement, use that medication, change vets every two seconds, try every new fad to make the horse better. I’ve witnessed frantic changes chasing resolution instead of just giving the horse time. Consistency and time are two factors grossly underestimated. Choosing a path of rehabilitation and sticking to that path has led to greater success than putting a short timeline on the use of one avenue to then go chase another and another and another...

When a horse has been chronically lame we are no longer just tending to the primary issue, we are now chasing a multitude of issues within the body that have occurred due to the chronic strain of the imbalance the horse has been in. Chronic foot issues? Well we likely have very tight and overcompensating hind end muscles along with joint soreness stemming from hock or stifle. But wait, since the hocks and stifles might be sore from the horse re-directing its weight off the front end to the hind end to take pressure off the feet, we now also may have pain in the lumbosacral region as well. Additionally, what type of foot issue are we dealing with? Imbalances? Inflammation of the bursa? Caudal hoof pain? We better check the tendons and ligaments of the front limbs too. Oh. and don’t forget about the thoracic sling. Chronic pain becomes a domino effect, it may stem from one area but once that domino falls the rest falls with it. Now that you have that picture in your mind, how do we put a timeline of healing on a horse who has been in chronic pain?

I’ve seen intense and complicated cases get better with time and consistency, sticking to one avenue and seeing it out, even with the therapy I offer in cases like this it takes TIME. I try my best to remain constant, teach my clients patience, aid them with gradual strengthening regimens, but every time I’m hit with the question of how long and in these types of cases how am I to put a timeline on their healing for issues that may have now stemmed throughout their entire body?

More than ever with rehabilitation we must practice patience and consistency because the weight of regret for rushing rehabilitation is not something I wish on anyone.
