In the history of Sacred Heart High School, there have been teachers who embody faith, excellence, resilience, and service. Among these stands Shelby A. Outlaw, a remarkable leader in education, law, and advocacy.
Shelby’s journey to prominence began in East Tennessee, where she developed a deep love for language and learning while studying at the University of Tennessee. Her academic drive and passion for knowledge led her to pursue both a Ph.D. and a J.D. at Emory University—an extraordinary foundation for a career that would span both the classroom and the courtroom.
From 1960 to 1965, Shelby made a lasting impact as a French and literature teacher at Sacred Heart High School. Known affectionately by her students as Madam Shelby Spruell, she transformed the French program by expanding it into a three-year curriculum and introducing innovative, immersive teaching methods that brought language and culture to life. Her dedication inspired many students to continue studying French and even to travel abroad.
Shelby found not only professional fulfillment at Sacred Heart but also a deep sense of community. She cherished the Sisters as trusted colleagues, particularly the guiding influence of Sr. Thomas Francis. She recalls with gratitude how, even during pregnancy, she was welcomed and supported by both students and staff—fondly saying that “the girls taught her how to teach.” Her contributions to education were only the beginning.
Shelby went on to break barriers in the legal field, becoming one of just four women in her graduating class at Emory Law School. Armed with a belief in the transformative power of education and persuasion, she founded The Outlaw Law Firm, where she achieved landmark victories that changed legal precedents and delivered justice to the underserved.
Shelby has argued cases before the Georgia Court of Appeals, the Supreme Court of Georgia, and [certiorari to] the United States Supreme Court—cementing her legacy as a formidable advocate for justice. Yet beyond her professional accolades, Shelby is remembered most for her vibrant spirit and unwavering dedication to serving others.
Whether in the classroom or the courtroom, Shelby has spent her life inspiring change, uplifting others, and making the world a better place.
Congratulations ... and welcome ... to Shelby!
