Alabama's only Kona Grill closed Monday with strong indications it may not reopen. The restaurant has been a Bridge Street staple since 2016, but the One Group has closed or converted properties amid declining sales. Huntsville diners lost a spot known for steaks, fresh seafood, and premium sushi rolls.

thinking about queso 24/7 over here (but what's new)

launching the first blaze of Hungry Hungry Trails on 9/25 at 9:25am — THE QUESO TRAIL — and it feels like my whole life has been leading to this.

some of you know this: Mama ate El Palacio yellow cheese dip while I was in utero and I was born into this world at Huntsville Hospital the very next day.

On 2/20/2019 my Mama passed away at HH while I was holding her hand. 6 years later on 2/20/25 I married my husband Ryan after he proposed on her birthday at her grave.

Since quitting drinking two years ago, now I'm all about alchemizing hard moments, places, and dates and turning them into something good so the world can taste and see that the Lord is good. I lost taste for 44 days once after a brain injury, today I am so grateful for every single flavor because I know what it was to go without.

my grief queso meetups in Nashville were built around the only thing I could eat some days, and helping those unseen feel a little less alone, because that is what I honestly needed in that era. And 9/25 my husband and I are launching the Queso Trail -- what I hope will be a happy and fun reason people will gather and smile around a shared bowl.

for years people thought my queso thing was silly.
once I realized I'm autistic and have adhd at 43, I realized it was my true comfort food. my North Star mix of textures and temperatures — warm smooth dip, cooling salsa, the salt + pull of a fresh tortilla, the way rice makes it a meal. i

t's regulation. it's joy.

it's been my inner child food since day one.
so here I am embracing her fully.

for the trail, I'm integrating Huntsville locations where a lot of my cheesy stories started:

Little Rosie's Taqueria — 4781 Whitesburg Dr.

during the DoorDash era, I was broke trying to save for facial repair surgery. we picked up an order there but I got my own little thing so my husband could try it : fresh tortillas with Mexican butter and a side of rice + side of queso. because that Mexican butter? it's the stuff of dreams. I still don't know what spice blend is in that stuff but it's of the gods and goddesses I am certain.

that evening, we had a little mid-shift picnic on the truck tailgate. then we picked up someone else's order and took it to their apartment. that was a good day.

Huntsville is one of the founding cities for the Queso Trail.

We are a meandering trail system launching across the Southeast — not a ranking, not a list. Just a strong signal when you need somewhere to point the car.

First blazes drop 9.25.

3 generations of my family have dined here at Main Street Cafe in Madison.

Inside Madison’s former City Hall and jail (built 1955), where Mom, Mama Jo and I shared chicken poulet, quiche and strawberry pretzel salad while passing trains rattled the building.

Southern comfort, international flair, and a place that still feels like family. More than lunch — it’s a Madison institution.

This is how you do duck in the South. Hudson Valley breast, seared crisp and roasted properly pink, sitting on sweet corn pudding (not polenta), with roasted summer squash, charred okra, glazed carrots, pepper jelly glacé and thyme jus. Sweet + acid + char + richness.
