Morning light on North Georgia mountains.

Up close and personal with a Japanese Beetle, which is generally considered a garden pest that voraciously eats flowers and plants. The beetles feature an iridescent, metallic looking shell. Interestingly, the colors are not due to pigment. In short, it's due to physics and the properties of light. At the microscopic level, much smaller than what is visible in this photo, the shell has repeating ridges that reflect light waves at different angles, which creates the iridescent effect. It's believed that the colors act as a protective camouflage that makes it harder for birds to see them.
