The below photos, are of a Wheeler underdrain system that was installed in the late 50's this type of system requires 5 (3") spheres, 8 (1 1/4") spheres, and 1 (1 3/8") spheres all of which are porcelain . Over a period of years the concrete surface tends to deteriorate due to all the water flow and chemical use. It is critical that the spheres in each hopper bottom stay in the original positions to ensure even flow during a backwash which cleans the media. In order to get the sphere back into their original position we install the All Service Liner that we manufacture. We not only manufacture the All Service Liner for the (14) sphere system, but we also manufacture the All Service Liner for the five sphere system. Once the All Service Liner is installed the spheres are placed followed by a pot fill gravel to help fill any voids. This is followed by various grades of gravel for supporting material. Each layer is placed and leveled prior to placement of the following layer. In most cases we utilize a sand and anthracite filtering media. However, in this case the owner prepurchased a glass media which we installed (2) layers of supporting, and then the final layer of a .45-.55 mm glass media. We have also include a microscopic photo of a .45mm sand and the .45-.55mm glass media so you can see it side by side along with photos of the glass, and sand separately.
